Volunteer Coordinator

Band 5

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.

Job overview

We are seeking a compassionate and highly organised Volunteer Coordinator to lead the delivery of our volunteer service at Southend Hospital. Volunteers play a vital role in enhancing patient experience and supporting staff, and this post is central to ensuring they are welcomed, trained, supported and able to make a meaningful contribution.

Working closely with clinical and non‑clinical teams, you will identify suitable volunteer roles, recruit and match volunteers to placements, and maintain strong systems for safeguarding and governance. You will champion a positive, inclusive and engaging volunteer culture, ensuring volunteers feel valued and recognised for the difference they make.

Main duties of the job

The Volunteer Coordinator will support the day‑to‑day delivery of the volunteer service at Southend Hospital, ensuring volunteers are safely recruited, trained, supported and engaged.

Key duties include:

  • Maintaining clear communication with volunteers and promoting the service to internal and external partners.

  • Supporting volunteer recruitment and role development in line with Trust and NHS guidance.

  • Working with clinical teams to shape volunteer roles that enhance patient experience and meet safeguarding, governance and policy requirements.

  • Overseeing the volunteer‑run CareCars service to ensure safe and reliable operation.

  • Line managing the Voluntary Services Administrator and providing supervision to volunteers.

  • Keeping the Better Impact system accurate and up to date, and coordinating volunteer communications, meetings and training.

  • Supporting events, audits and reporting to contribute to service improvement and the Trust’s Volunteer Strategy.

  • Provide support to other sites across the Trust when required.

Working for our organisation

Our ambition is to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and well being of our patients, and provide a vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

We aim to make the most of our skills and experiences so we can become the best we can be. As one organisation we will recruit the finest and retain more specialist staff due to more employment opportunities across our Trust.
