Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.
Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.
We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.
Job overview
We are looking for eager, outgoing Clinical Fellow ST1-2 to join our friendly team based at our Trauma and Orthopedic department in Southend Hospital, for a 12 month opportunity on a full time basis.
As part of this diversified and stimulating role please see the detail in the 'Main duties of the job' for an overview of your duties and you will become part of regular meetings, examples below, to ensure knowledge is shared and disseminated to give patients the best outcome.
- Trauma Meeting: Daily
- Sub-speciality MDT’s/Spinal MDT: Wednesday morning
- X-Ray meeting: Wednesday afternoon
- Clinical governance monthly with opportunities to present projects and M&M. Online research meeting: Attendance encouraged Wednesdays.
You will have access to the Education Centre on site at Southend Hospital which features a lecture theatre, library and several meeting spaces equipped with conferencing equipment. The Education Centre is used extensively by doctors in training, Consultants, General Practitioners and other professions allied to medicine.
Main duties of the job
In this interesting and varied role you will: -
- see emergency admissions presenting to A&E - during your post you will see the full range of fracture and acute Orthopaedic problems.
- be involved in the day to day management of elective Orthopaedic and trauma patients on the wards.
- attend theatre to assist and be taught basic surgical techniques.
- learn and develop communication skills
- develop your skills in team working and working with other health professionals
- get an understand the process of discharge planning for patients with complex health and social care requirements.
- become competent in practical procedures such as application of plaster of Paris, aspiration of joints, closed reduction techniques for joint dislocation, simple fractures, traction pin insertion and setting up of skeletal tractions.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practice
- MBBS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- MRCS part 1 +/- part 2
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous experience at ST1-2 or equivalent level with at least 12 months in Trauma & Orthopaedics/Surgery
- Able to organise own learning and CPD
Desirable criteria
- Experience of collecting and presenting data orally and in writing
Communication
Essential criteria
- Able to communicate clearly in written English
- Demonstrate ability to manage time and prioritise workload
- Ability to use computers and clinical programmes
- Able to demonstrate an ability to form good relationships with patients, carers and multi-disciplinary colleagues.
Audit & Clinical Governance
Essential criteria
- Interest in and knowledge of medical audit and understanding the principles of evidence based audit.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of audit participation with high ethical/professional standards.
