Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Job overview

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust welcomes applicants to apply for a Clinical Fellow post in Ophthalmology with special interest in Glaucoma. This is a full-time post within the Glaucoma service for a fixed term of 12 months in the first instance.

The post offers an exciting opportunity for an energetic and innovative person to join the ophthalmic service at Southend Hospital in Essex which is part of the wider MSE Hospitals. 

This post is ideally suited to candidates who have some experience in glaucoma and wish to further their clinical and surgical skills. Candidates should be able to demonstrate that they have achieved surgical skills to a level including independent cataract surgery. This post is not recognised for specialist training by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists at this time

Applicants must have MBBS or equivalent and at least 4 years training in ophthalmology.  We welcome applicants requiring dual sponsorhip through the  MTI programme and those fully registered with the GMC with a license to practice.

Main duties of the job

To act as point of contact for glaucoma support to junior medical staff within the department and undertake some general ophthalmic outpatient clinic

To coordinate the acute glaucoma service, under the guidance of the Consultant Ophthalmologists

 Attending to administrative matters and correspondence relating to patients

SPAs to be undertaken on-site

To provide clinical services in line with the Trusts clinical governance arrangements which is designed to ensure that agreed quality standards are achieved.  These requirements include:-

Audit – To undertake audit of clinical practice within the department to ensure that current standards and evidence-based practice are applied.

Risk Management – To work within the Trust’s clinical risk management policies and in particular to participate as appropriate in clinical incident reporting.

Appraisal – All doctors in the Trust participate in the Trust’s appraisal process. Training Activities. The hospital has Associate University status. Consequently, the training of medical students, junior hospital doctors, nurses and physiotherapists has a high priority. T

Clinical Governance is a major part of our daily practice. The hospital is at the forefront of providing same, with a separate department and allocated clinical and ancillary staff to service same.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCOphth or equivalent

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience of managing patients with glaucoma in collaboration with other subspecialties to optimize surgical and ophthalmic outcomes.
  • Surgical management of glaucoma and proficient in cataract surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Primary interest in glaucoma and general ophthalmology

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Glaucoma experience and skills Similar to a trainee within 6 months of CCT
  • Highly proficient at cataract surgery, managing vitreous loss and training in intra ocular surgery
  • Demonstrable evidence of training and expertise in cataract surgery

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of understanding of Clinical Governance and participation in Audit
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of participating in regular Audit presentations
