Job overview
We are inviting applications for a 12-month South West Endoscopy Training Academy (SWETA) Leadership Fellowship in Gastroenterology at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
This unique post is designed for post-CCT or senior Gastroenterology trainees who wish to develop advanced clinical expertise alongside meaningful regional leadership experience. The fellowship combines specialty clinical training (5 sessions per week) with protected time (3 sessions per week) to contribute to regional endoscopy training and service transformation through the South West Endoscopy Network.
This is an exceptional opportunity to build leadership capability, contribute to regional strategy, and develop advanced endoscopic and subspecialty skills within a high-performing, JAG-accredited service and Regional Endoscopy Training Centre.
There is no commitment to General Internal Medicine and no on-call requirement.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will:

Deliver high-quality clinical care in Gastroenterology across inpatient and outpatient settings.

Undertake advanced specialty training aligned to individual interests (e.g. upper GI bleeding, IBD, hepatology, nutrition, advanced endoscopy).

Contribute to regional SWETA workstreams, supporting endoscopy training, faculty development and network delivery.
-
Support simulation training and human factors courses.
-
Participate in endoscopy-related research and quality improvement initiatives.
-
Engage in clinical audit, governance and service improvement work.
-
Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams across hospital and community settings.

Contribute to teaching and supervision of trainees and other healthcare professionals.

Participate fully in appraisal and revalidation processes.
The role provides clinical supervision from a consultant aligned to the fellow’s subspecialty interest, alongside leadership supervision from the SWETA Director.

There is a dedicated Gastroenterology / Hepatology ward at Cheltenham General and a daily consultant presence in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Both are supported by specialist nursing, rehabilitation and other ancillary services.

The appointees have a general duty of care for their own health, safety and well-being and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital. This statutory duty is in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with the post.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The SWETA Leadership Fellow will divide their time between clinical training and regional leadership activity.
Clinical Responsibilities (5 Sessions Per Week)

Provide inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology care.

Participate in specialty clinics aligned to subspecialty interest.
-
Undertake endoscopy training lists, including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Develop expertise in areas such as upper GI bleeding, IBD, hepatology, nutrition or advanced endoscopy.
-
Work within established MDT frameworks (IBD, Hepatology, complex polyp, radiology).
-
Maintain accurate clinical records and comply with Trust governance standards.
-
Participate in audit and quality improvement programmes.
-
Work flexibly according to departmental needs.
There is no General Internal Medicine commitment and no on-call requirement.
SWETA / Regional Leadership Responsibilities (3 Sessions Per Week)

Support delivery of South West Endoscopy Network priorities.

Contribute to regional endoscopy training strategy and faculty development.

Assist in organisation and delivery of simulation and human factors training.

Support regional workforce and service development initiatives.

Participate in training research and innovation projects.

Contribute to development of training materials and regional educational events.
The postholder will work within the framework of team decisions and demonstrate initiative, enthusiasm and flexibility.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent
- Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies from a UKFPO affiliated foundation programme or equivalent by time of appointment in line with GMC standards
- ST6 or above experience in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy or equivalent
- Eligiable for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice
Desirable criteria
- Intercalated BSc or equivalent
- Higher degrees including MSc, PhD or MD
- JAG certification in gastroscopy and colonoscopy
Experience
Essential criteria
- Independent at colonoscopy and level 2 polypectomy
- Independent at OGD
- Independent with UGI bleeding therapy for peptic ulcers and varices
- Independent in outpatient clinics
