Neuro-Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist, Band 6 (22.5 hours a week)

This is an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to join the Neuro-Oncology team who shares our vision to provide consistently outstanding care and service to our patients. 

The Neuro-Oncology service diagnosis and treats tumours of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system. 

You will gain a valuable insight into supporting patients at diagnosis and through the cancer pathway, including during and post treatment and when disease recurs or advances. 

We are seeking an experienced cancer nurse with advanced communication skills to specialise in Neuro-Oncology. You should be enthusiastic, caring and self-motivated to join this busy service. 

The ideal candidate will have experience working within Neuro-Oncology or another tumour site as a CNS. OR have previously worked as a nurse in Oncology or Neurology. We are looking for a motivated and experienced nurse with OR without CNS experience who is keen to develop their skills within this specialist role. 

This is a great opportunity to develop your clinical skills in a specialist tertiary cancer centre. You will provide holistic support, education and specialist advice to patients carers and health professionals. You will work autonomously as well as being part of a team. 

Additional working pattern details: 3 days a week

Main duties of the job

- Carry out in-depth holistic assessments and devise individualised care or treatment plans for patients within the speciality. 

- Act as the patients advocate and key worker, providing vital emotional support to them and their families/carers, managing symptoms and providing guidance from diagnosis throughout their treatment pathway. 

- Work closely with doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to ensure seamless and coordinated care. 

- Prioritise workload according to clinical need. 

- Monitor patients progress across various areas of healthcare, ensuing investigations and treatments are timely. 

- Provide clear information to patients, families and carers to empower them and enable them to make informed decisions.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be a core member of the Neuro-Oncology MDT.

The role enables the delivery of high quality, enhanced supportive care to patients diagnosed with Central Nervous System tumours (CNS) and those close to them.

The post holder will be responsible for working as an autonomous expert practitioner, making critical clinical decisions when assessing, monitoring and managing patients.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Adult Nurse on NMC register
  • Evidence of masters level learning/Willingness to undertake
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development E.G SACT or palliative care module
  • Recognised teaching qualification or experience of teaching
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced communication skills course

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience at B6/senior B5 E.G Nurse in Charge in relevant speciality of Oncology or Neurology
Desirable criteria
  • Current clinical nurse specialist
  • Significant experience in a leadership role

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of being up to date with evidence based practice
Desirable criteria
  • Completed QI or research project
