Job overview

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic nurse, to deliver and supervise patient care on our 21 bedded Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. 

The unit is supported by Specialist Stroke Nurses and Consultants as well as a team of Multi disciplinary Therapist. 

We offer in house training pertinent to Stroke and Acute Medicine.

The applicant will be expected to co-ordinate a busy unit. Therefore, they must be able to problem solve, use their initiative, time manage and act as a role model in all situations. They must be able to think laterally and demonstrate management of personnel within a funded establishment.

The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate leadership skills, carry out audits and appraisals and take an active role in a designated link role.

 

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a nurse who is both motivated, dynamic and enthusiastic, to deliver and supervise patient care in a Hyper acute Stroke Ward. 

The applicant will be expected to co-ordinate a busy unit. Therefore, they must be able to problem solve, use their initiative, time manage and act as a role model in all situations. They must be able to think laterally and demonstrate management of personnel within a funded establishment.

The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate leadership skills, carry out audits and appraisals and take an active role in a designated link role.

Applicants will have an in-depth knowledge of either acute care nursing or acute stroke nursing having  worked in the speciality for extensive years. They must demonstrate organisational skills, research and evidence- based practice and preferably hold an ILS certificate, a teaching and assessing qualification, as well as possessing relevant acute 
medical skills. They must have knowledge of SSNAP and NIHSS for Stroke care. 

The successful candidate will be expected to work their contracted hours and rotate through all shift patterns including night duty.

Hatherley Ward  is a 21 bedded unit specialising in Hyper Acute Stroke, meeting the needs of acutely unwell  stroke patients. 

We support, supervise and assess nursing students.

We offer in-house training and are supported by a team of Specialist Stroke Nurses, Therapists and Consultants.

2. JOB PURPOSE.

To manage and professionally lead the nursing team in the clinical area in the absence of the senior nurse and as part of the multidisciplinary team.

To deliver direct care and supervise patient care for the clinical area ensuring assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of a high standard of nursing care.

To manage caseload of patients within defined clinical area.

5. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.

Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council with a extensive  post registration experience.

Minimum evidence of post registration qualification/equivalent in acute medicine/stroke.

Enhanced IT skills.

Enhanced levels of dexterity and accuracy pertaining to clinical skills.

Act as a role model and resource for all staff disseminating clinical skills and knowledge.

To participate in own and team’s personal and professional development.

Ensuring progression through Individual Performance Development review and Revalidation process.

Demonstrate understanding of research and evidence based practice, and participate as required in audit.

To support senior nurse in recruitment, retention and performance related issues, including being regularly responsible for the supervision and mentorship for unqualified/qualified staff and students.

Support senior nurse for clinical area in the management of budgetary control and resource management including duty rotas and skill mix requirements,

To support the senior nurse with Clinical Governance and risk management.

To input and retrieve patient and staff information from computer-based system and maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records.

To support Senior Nurses with Patient Public Involvement ensuring it is integrated into service delivery.

To provide clinical leadership that inspires and motivates others

To work with the Ward Manager ensuring that appropriate staff working in the ward environment have the knowledge and skills to provide expert care to the acutely ill patient.

To liaise with other members of the acute medicine and stroke teams to ensure policies and protocols are in place to facilitate expert care of acutely unwell patients.

To be actively involved in the setting up and maintaining of educational programmes that ensure advanced knowledge and skills amongst the nursing team

Ability to lead a team and work under pressure whilst effectively managing own and others time.

To assist the Ward Manager to manage both material and human resources

To manage beds effectively to ensure patient flow is maintained.

9. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORKING CONDITIONS.

Will be required to work within recognised Manual Handling Guidelines.
May be expected to frequently manoeuvre patients/objects over 15kg using appropriate aids for short periods of time.

Will have frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions and will be required to follow Policies and Procedures pertaining to bodily fluids, infection control and COSHH regulations.

May be required to work in confined spaces.

Ability to work where the work pattern may be unpredictable, but there is also a requirement for concentration e.g. drug rounds.
