Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity for a fully autonomous, BSE accredited, Echocardiographer to join our busy yet supportive department. The role is to independently perform and report high - quality adult echocardiograms on a daily basis. Activity is delivered from three sites including the Community Diagnostic Centre.
In addition to clinical duties there are opportunities to contribute to research, service development and the education of other healthcare professionals.

Main duties of the job
Candidates will have BSc in Clinical Physiology or equivalent with appropriate post BSc (or equivalent) experience.
BSE accreditation with appropriate experience and proven participation as an autonomous practitioner.
The successful candidates should have good organisational skills with a positive can-do attitude, be a team player with a passion for service development and improvement. They will independently perform and report adult transthoracic Echocardiograms to BSE standard as part of everyday practice both within the trust and in the Community Diagnostic Centre. Provide clinical supervision to other Cardiac Physiologists and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals. The post holder should have excellent communication, interpersonal and IT skills being able to communicate complicated information effectively within the multi-disciplinary team. To be responsible for the management of junior Cardiac Physiologists as required.
Working for our organisation
The Cardiology Investigation Department is an integral part of the wider Cardiology services within Gloucestershire. Our department works alongside a team of 15 Cardiology Consultants with a broad range of sub specialty interests, supported by associate specialists, specialty doctors and registrars. We are a small, friendly and highly skilled team delivering adult transthoracic Echocardiograms to BSE standards, as well as complex Echocardiograms for both inpatients and outpatients across two hospital sites and the community diagnostic centre.
We place strong emphasis on education and development. Cardiac Physiologists benefit from dedicated teaching sessions and monthly clinical meetings, in which all Echo Physiologists are expected to participate. Training is actively supported with opportunities to engage in research and development.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We are looking for a passionate, forward thinking Cardiac Physiologist to continue to build on the good work already achieved in developing an outstanding Echo service. They will demonstrate clinical leadership and work as part of a multidisciplinary team, providing appropriate training to a wide range of medical professionals.
The post holder will be a fully independent practitioner, autonomously performing and reporting a full range of routine and complex adult Echocardiograms on both inpatient and outpatients to BSE standard. They will organise and prioritise their own daily workload, providing clinical reports in a timely manner.
Participate in Transoesophageal, Dobutamine Stress and Exercise Stress Echocardiography
Assist with bubble studies and contrast Echocardiography
Keep up to date with current developments and advances in Echocardiography and general Cardiology whilst maintaining own CPD.
Establish and maintain good working relationships with all members of the organisation.
Provide portable echocardiograms for hospital in-patients on all wards, department of critical care, coronary care unit and emergency department.
Work on a rotational basis at the community diagnostic centre
Provide Echo training for Regional Registrars
To be aware of the health and safety implications for Echocardiographers in relation to ergonomics whilst scanning and take all necessary steps to minimise injury to oneself.
Participate in the departmental appraisal process and the management of junior Cardiac Physiologists.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- BSc Clinical Physiology (Cardiology) or equivalent
- BSE accreditation
- Current ILS
- Experience with full range of Echocardiography
- In depth knowledge of Cardiology
- Able to apply theoretical knowledge to patient care
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Physically fit to endure prolonged periods of scanning and manual handling daily
- IT experience
Desirable criteria
- Post graduate certificate/diploma in medical ultrasound
- Previous training of junior members of staff and other medical staff
