Job overview

Due to retirements within the team we have the exciting opportunity for a substantive fulltime (10 PA) consultant post, within the Obstetrics and Gynaecology services at Gloucestershire Hospitals Trusts we are seeking a consultant with a specialist interest in menopause.

The post-holder will help provide specialist Obstetrics & Gynaecology services, focusing on outpatient gynaecology services of menopause, hysteroscopy and cancer exclusion clinics. They will provide on call support overnight, and on weekends, together with appropriate teaching and supervision of junior doctors and medical students. They will be expected to work closely with the multiprofessional team to provide a high quality obstetrics and gynaecology service.

Integral to the responsibilities of this post are the following objectives:

  • To ensure the delivery of a high-quality patient-centred clinical service
  • To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in that same task
  • To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
  • To work in accordance with our trust’s procedures and operating policies
  • To support the business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Women and Children Division and our Trust
  • To work within the framework of team decisions
  • To take a whole systems approach to working with the wider health community both NHS and social services
  • To show initiative, enthusiasm and flexibility

Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities/Key Responsibilities 

The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to the patients presenting to the Department. 

• The provision of high-quality care in all clinical settings, including delivery suite, theatres, outpatient clinics,  wards, and working well as part of a multidisciplinary team

• To support the clinical decision making of resident medical and nursing staff

• To provide on call support out of hours. To attend the department out of hours as per agreed protocols

  Professional Development, Education and Training 

• To participate in ongoing training and personal development 

• To contribute to training and teaching advanced training modules in menopause

 

Working for our organisation

The Gynaecology service is based at Gloucester Royal Hospital, and provides care for women from Gloucestershire. Operating lists are undertaken at both Cheltenham and Gloucester hospital with outpatient clinics being held in the Women’s Centre at Gloucestershire Royal, Cheltenham General and surrounding community hospitals. The gynaecology in-patient beds are on ward 9A in the main hospital.

The GHNHSFT is one of the largest maternity units in the Southwest. In 2024-25 5411 women gave birth within GHNHSFT. It has specialist clinics for fetal medicine, maternal medicine, preterm birth and diabetes and links in with the South--West Maternal medicine network and tertiary fetal medicine services in Bristol.

In Gloucester the consultant maternity unit is in the Women’s Centre, with antenatal clinics, Maternity Assessment Unit and obstetric and fetal medicine ultrasound. The central delivery suite has two obstetric theatres and an alongside triage department. There is an alongside midwifery-led unit birth unit.

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Entry on Specialist Register (or entry expected within 6 months)
  • Advanced Training Module (ATSM, SITM or equivalent) in menopause
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced Training Module (ATSM, SITM or equivalent) in Hysteroscopy
  • Advanced Training Module (ATSM, SITM or equivalent) in acute gynaecology and early pregnancy

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to appraise research critically and apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems
  • Evidence of participation in Audit, Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement project
  • Ability to manage risk
Desirable criteria
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience in Gynaecology equivalent to that required for a UK CCT
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
  • Ability to lead emergency Gynaecology services in and out of hours
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in change management and innovation
