Job overview
You will be working as part of the day surgery team in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital delivering exceptional care for the patients attending the unit. Day case surgery is becoming more common, it now makes up approximately 70% of all surgery performed. The patients will expect, and will receive, the highest standards of professional care by all members of the team involved.
Main duties of the job
- To provide high quality nursing care whilst working within limitations of the role and understanding how to escalate when required.
- To work effectively as a member of the multidisciplinary team
- Maintain and develop high standards of care
- Work proactively to ensure that all patients expectations and needs are met within a timely manner
- Respond to emergency situations with composure, maintaining patient safety and seeking immediate support whilst supporting the patient, family and other staff as required.
- The ability to maintain clear, accurate and concise patient records in keeping with departmental and professional standards.
- Report near misses and untoward incidents, complaints, emergencies, injury or medication efforts via the trust reporting system and assist lead staff in investigating as required.

- Mayhill Unit is open Monday - Friday (excluding bank holidays) and we work shifts between the hours of 0700 and 2100.
- You will be involved in the pre and post operative care for a number of surgeries including a variety of specialities such as Head and Neck, Colorectal and Upper Gastrointestinal, Gynecological, Breast, Vascular and Trauma.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To communicate effectively, especially where patient ability to do so is compromised.
- Ability to disseminate contentious and delicate information appropriately
- To deliver safe care within a challenging and changing clinical environment.
- To adhere to all Trust policies and procedures and professional code of conduct.
- To input and retrieve patient and staff information from computer-based systems.
- As a Health Care Assistant, you will be responsible for participating and assisting in the delivery of care / services to patients
- Provide safe and compassionate care of a high standard under supervision of registered nurses
- Assisting patients with activities of daily living including personal care and nutritional and dietary support
- Recording of observations and assessments of patients additional supportive tasks as directed by registered nurse e.g. venepuncture and ECG’s

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English Grade 4 or above
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of a completed care certificate
