Job overview

Ward Sister or Charge Nurse, Band 6 (37.5 hours per week)

As a ward sister or charge nurse you would be responsible in managing and leading the nursing team as a key member of the multidisciplinary team. You will deliver, coordinate and supervise patient care, ensuring that the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care is of high standard, encompassing the Trust vison of “best care for everyone”. 

You will be visible within the clinical area, role modelling evidence-based practices and high standards of patient care, communication and organisation for others to follow. You will work collaboratively and cohesively with the multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of patients and their families.

Main duties of the job

This is a permanent Band 6 post as a ward sister or charge nurse on the Head and Neck inpatient ward. The post holder will:

- Work collaboratively with colleagues to lead the nursing team within Head and Neck inpatient ward in an engaged, collaborative, cohesive, pro-active and progressive manner to maintain ‘Outstanding’ standards of patient care and service delivery.

- To deliver and role model expert clinical patient care and operational decision making within Head and Neck speciality

- To work in manner that promotes shared leadership and on-going professional development of self and others

- To work collaboratively with the senior team to drive patient safety and quality forwards through the development and implementation of service and quality improvement projects

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

- Deliver, demonstrate and supervise safe and appropriate care within a challenging and changing clinical environment, using highly specialised equipment and resources

- Communicate effectively with patients, especially where the patient’s ability to communicate is compromised.

- Administer, demonstrate and supervise the delivery of medications, including multiple continuous infusions, within the Procedure for the Ordering, Prescribing, and Administration of Medications (POPAM) guidelines

- Work collaboratively alongside other health professionals to provide high standards of care for patients within Head and Neck speciality   

- Take a key role in the implementation of any clinical initiative or introduction of new equipment within Head and Neck ward

- Take an active clinical leadership role and act as shift co-ordinator

- Work continuously to promote and support clinical training, education and development of other staff within the Head and Neck inpatient ward and beyond

Management

- Work alongside the Matron, Band 7, consultants and wider team to help determine and deliver on strategic service objectives

- Work alongside site and operational delivery teams to maintain patient flow and capacity within agreed procedures

- Support the maintenance of the electronic roster, alongside the Band 7 to ensure that it is kept up to date

- Seek to eliminate or reduce any staff conflict and take any remedial and on-going action as appropriate

- Manage any patient, relative or staff complaints in line with the Trust complaints procedure

- Deliver and support staff appraisals and promote mandatory training to achieve key performance indicators

- Support the service and Trust recruitment and retention strategy and participate in the interviewing process for new staff

- Take responsibility for the health and safety of patients, relatives and staff and contribute towards clinical and environmental risk assessments and risk reduction practices.

Leadership

- Lead the nursing team in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care within the multidisciplinary team

- Support the development of a highly skilled, motivated and engaged workforce which continually strives to improve patient, relative and staff experience

- Role model high standards of patient care, communication, commitment and organisation for others to follow

- Support and lead any service developments and use effective leadership skills to ensure effective change as appropriate.

- Encourage and promote a ‘shared leadership’ model, enabling and empowering others, of all grades, to take the lead with various initiatives within Head and Neck speciality and the wider Trust whilst clearly demonstrating the Trust leadership values and behaviours.

- Lead or actively support all agreed quality improvements within Head and Neck speciality and link with other teams and services as appropriate within and outside of Trust.

- Collaborate with local, network and national colleagues as appropriate to maintain shared best practice within critical care

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Active registration with the Nursing Midwifery Council as a Registered Nurse
  • Management/leadership qualification or equivalent level of skill gained through experience
  • Recognised teaching and assessing qualification
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional portfolio and registration revalidation
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate qualification in Head and Neck Nursing or relevant qualification
  • Completion of Silver Quality Improvement

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate experience working in in a Head and Neck service or relevant speciality
  • Evidence of building effective working relationships with members of the multi-disciplinary team and other key stakeholders
  • Experience of managing individuals to include objective setting, learning and development and reviewing of progress against development plans
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of leading and managing change

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • In depth knowledge of Head and Neck patients and operational processes within the speciality
  • Knowledge of the trust appraisal and development process
  • A good understanding of clinical governance, incident reporting and investigating
  • Strong, professional leadership qualities, assertive and self-confident individual
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrates ability to question and challenge nursing practice in a constructive way so that standards of patient care are continually evaluated and improved.
