Registered Nurse - Band 5 Endoscopy (30 hours a week)

We are seeking an enthusiastic, highly motivated nurse with appropriate experience in an acute setting with a commitment to team working and a keen interest in continuous improvement.  Experience in an endoscopy setting would be an advantage, but full training will be given to nurses from different backgrounds.  

All nurses will complete an induction programme which will be tailored to their specific needs. Once completed, they will be expected to participate in the cross-county on-call rota providing out of hours emergency care.  Following induction they will be expected to undertake a number of specific endoscopy courses in line with their ongoing development programme.

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest hospital Trusts in the country and provides acute elective and specialist care for the local community across two sites in Gloucester and Cheltenham. Gloucestershire is a rural county with an historic past, combining picturesque areas such as the Cotswolds, together with excellent shopping centres, museums, schools, leisure activities, and restaurants.

The JAG accredited Endoscopy Units at Cheltenham General Hospital and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital are busy nurse-led units that serve as both a Regional Endoscopy Training Centre and National Bowel Cancer Screening Centre.  In addition to this, the unit encompasses a purpose built endoscope decontamination area. The unit handles emergency procedures as well as caring for routine inpatients/outpatients.  In addition to this, the unit also have specialist lists including: ERCP, Peg Insertion, EUS, RFA, EBUS, Bronchoscopy, and Thoracoscopy

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council with appropriate teaching/assessing qualification.

Appropriate experience within an acute clinical area.  

Enhanced IT skills.

Enhanced levels of dexterity and accuracy pertaining to clinical skills. e.g. Admission of intravenous injections/cannulation.

Act as a resource for all staff disseminating clinical skills and knowledge.

Ensure personal and professional development is progressed through Individual Performance Development Review and PREP guidelines.

Demonstrate understanding of research based practice, and participate as required in audit.

KEY RESULT AREAS

Demonstrate ability to assess patient condition and implement appropriate care, within the multidisciplinary team.

To safely decontaminate endoscopes used within the department and other areas both manually and using the EWD's.

To accessorise in the Endoscopy theatre supporting the doctor and Endoscopy assistant.

To manage the patients airway/monitor condition during the endoscopic procedure. 

To communicate effectively, especially where patient ability to do so is compromised.

Ability to disseminate contentious and delicate information appropriately.

To deliver safe care within a challenging and changing clinical environment, using nursing/Endoscopy equipment and resources safely and as appropriate.

To administer medication and treatment within Procedure for the Ordering, Prescribing and Administration of Medication Guidelines.

To deliver and receive information which may cause emotional distress to all parties.

Participate in mentorship and educational programmes for students and other members of the team.

To adhere to all Trust policies and procedures and professional code of conduct.

Regularly responsible for the supervision and mentorship for unqualified, qualified staff and students.

To input and retrieve patient and staff information from computer based systems.

Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Will be required to work within recognised Manual Handling guidelines.

May be expected to frequently manoeuvre patients/objects over 15kg using appropriate aids for short periods of time.

Will have frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions including the use of chemicals and will be required to follow Policies and Procedures pertaining to bodily fluids, infection control and COSHH regulations.

May be required to work in confined spaces.

Ability to work where the work pattern may be unpredictable, but there is also a requirement for concentration.
