Job overview
The purpose of the post is to provide additional Consultant input to the Trust’s gastroenterology and endoscopy services. As a senior employee of the Trust, the post-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support, other clinical, medical and managerial colleagues providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients.
Main duties of the job
Integral to the responsibilities of the posts are the following requirements: -
• to ensure the provision of a first-class clinical service
• to provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty

• to undertake all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies
• to support the business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Medical Division and our Trust

• to take a whole systems approach to working with the wider health community both NHS and social services
• to show initiative, enthusiasm and flexibility
• to conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s and Division’s services plans
This post will enable the Gastroenterology team to further develop the local service and the post-holder will be expected to contribute to a consultant led service by allowing an increase in service capacity
This role will include endoscopy provision over weekends along with on-call services and Gastroenterologist of the Day cover across both acute sites
Working for our organisation
Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT) is one of the UK's largest providers of secondary care services.
We are seeking to appoint a Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our team of 15 consultants. The post will support the general gastroenterology & specialist inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) service, although applicants with other specialist interests are also considered.
The Trust has a 16-bed Gastroenterology & Hepatology ward at Cheltenham General Hospital, alongside a daily consultant presence at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital for inpatient referrals & endoscopy. Outpatient clinics are delivered at both hospital sites, with additional outreach clinics across the county.
Endoscopy services are provided through fully equipped units at Cheltenham General & Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals, offering 7 procedure rooms and the full range of diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower gastrointestinal procedures. The service is supported by 8 clinical endoscopists & includes a tertiary referral service for complex polyp resection. Additional JAG-accredited endoscopy facilities are commissioned at Cirencester and Stroud Community Hospitals. GHNHSFT is home to one of the country's highest-performing Bowel Cancer Screening Centres and the Regional Endoscopy Training Centre, which has an international reputation for excellence. The Trust also hosts the South West Endoscopy Training Academy, delivering regular endoscopy training courses across both hospital sites.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We expect the post-holder to support the delivery of a robust service in order to provide high quality care to Gastroenterology patients in a timely manner:
• to be responsible for inpatients on a rota basis on Knightsbridge ward based in Cheltenham General Hospital
• to be responsible for reviewing in-patient referrals and providing in patient endoscopy service at Gloucester Royal Hospital as part of the Gastroenterologist of the Day rota.
• to be responsible for providing advice and input to patients with Gastroenterology problems referred by other specialties when on-call or when attending a clinic
• to provide advice regarding patients with Gastroenterology problems referred by GPs and other staff (eg pharmacists, Nurse Practitioners etc) including via Cinapsis and Advice and Guidance as needed
• to provide outpatient clinics both at acute and community sites
• to provide consultant led dedicated endoscopic lists at acute and community sites within job plan including when on-call
• to review new patients to Knightsbridge ward but also to other acute wards during on-call weekends as well as potential discharges or those causing concern
• to be available to review or advise regarding gastroenterology patients in ED or SDEC (Same Day Emergency Care) in a timely manner when on-call
• to conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements within the parameters of our Division’s and Trust’s agreed objectives
• to support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff
• to support the delivery of the IBD service
• The post-holder will be immediately accountable to the Clinical Lead and Divisional Lead.
• The post-holder will be expected to undertake appraisal and to respond to any identified development needs
• The post-holder will have a general duty of care for their own health, safety and well-being and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital. This statutory duty is in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with the posts.

Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- General training leading to CCT (or equivalent) in Gastroenterology
- Expertise in endoscopic procedures
- Ability to take full independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration
- MBBS or equivalent
- Upper and Lower GI Endoscopic experience
Desirable criteria
- Additional degrees or diplomas relevant to the speciality
Knowledge and Skills

- Ability to take a whole systems approach to Gastroenterology and Endoscopy work within the context of the hospital as a whole
- Training in teaching skills
