We are looking for a knowledgeable and passionate individual to join our Specialist Midwifery workforce in the role of Treating Tobacco Dependency Specialist Midwife. The role of the Treating Tobacco Dependency Lead Midwife (TTD LM) will be to manage and lead the maternity Tobacco Treatment Advisors (TTA) which provides tobacco dependency support, advice and treatment to pregnant smokers and their partners.

The post-holder will support the coordination and delivery of the Gloucestershire Maternity Tobacco Dependency Services, Smoke Free Hospitals and other related projects and initiatives across Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as well as aid in the development of new service initiatives related to reducing smoking in pregnancy in the community and hospital settings.

Supporting midwives to: 

- Identify pregnant women who smoke by undertaking CO monitoring and discussion

- Provide women and their partners with clear, accurate, information on the harms caused by smoking in pregnancy (Very Brief Advice)

- Refer pregnant smokers and those who blow a CO reading of 4ppm or high to the inhouse maternity smoking cessation service

- Follow up smoking at every contact with women, taking account of feedback received from the in-house service in response to referrals made. 

Identify the training and educational needs for all maternity staff in relation to smoking in pregnancy. 

Co-ordinate, oversee and deliver maternity staff training at various mandatory and one-off training sessions throughout the year on the importance of reducing smoking in pregnancy.

Support maternity staff to provide smoking cessation advice by providing clinical advice and support to healthcare professionals across the maternity unit.

Work in collaboration with the ICB, Public Health, external Stop Smoking Services and other relevant external organisations, facilitating participation in research projects where appropriate.

Work closely with the Acute Inpatient Tobacco Free Team on smoke-free initiatives.

Clinical Responsibilities:

Provide individualised, family centred, holistic care which contributes to both safety and satisfaction, and facilitates all the adaptations essential for successful childbearing. 

Ensures accurate and contemporaneous records of all care given and audit same. Complete and monitor other records as required by statute and local policy.

Liaise with all other personnel regarding access to the department, promoting relationships to enhance the quality of care to the consumer and ensuring effective communication with health care professionals. 

To provide Midwifery leadership and to have a clinical responsibility and accountability for all midwifery and support staff, thus ensuring the continuing development of best practice.

To ensure that evidence-based practice is implemented and audited on a regular basis, to encourage and promote innovative practice.

To take responsibility for clinical and non-clinical risk issues ensuring that audits and risk assessments take place and the appropriate resulting action taken.

Maintains personal contact with patients and meets their needs on an individual basis, using the process of listening, assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care. 

Carries out midwifery care to the highest possible standard according to agreed policies and procedures, and the Midwives Rules and Code of Practice. 

Ensures that the appropriate practitioner is informed promptly of any complication in the mother’s or baby’s condition. 

Included in the Band 7 on call Rota and the Specialist Midwives escalation Rota

Managerial Responsibilities: 

To endeavour to achieve a high standard of morale by effective organisation and leadership. 

To support the Line Manager and Strategic lead for Tobacco control in the utilisation of resources in the maintenance of the service within the post-holder’s area of responsibility and in support of the Division.
 
Develop and maintain a close working relationship with the Line Manager and Strategic lead. Report to and deputise for Line Manager as required. 

Use resources effectively and efficiently within agreed budget allocation. 

Be prepared to work in or rotate to other areas of the maternity unit, other than in the area where based, if required to do so to meet the service needs in an emergency providing a 24-hour service. 

To liaise with other senior staff to provide a corporate approach to management of services and standards of care. 

To support the Midwifery Managers in the attainment of the Divisions aims and objectives as detailed in the Trust Service Plan 

To ensure their own and staff attendance at regular staff meetings and be responsible for taking forward decisions made, liaising with other professionals as necessary.

To act as a resource for the support and guidance of staff.

Qualifications

  • Significant experience at Band 6, or above, in a specialist area, or any other relevant area with transferrable skills
  • Hold a Degree in Midwifery or evidence of study at that level
  • Hold a mentorship/teaching qualification
