Job overview

The Matron is the most senior leader in midwifery within their clinical areas of responsibility, always upholding high quality midwifery care. They are accountable for midwifery practice within their clinical areas and ensure that midwifery issues are escalated to the Head of Midwifery, Director of Midwifery, Divisional General Manager, Speciality Director as appropriate. The Matron acts as clinical expert for their clinical areas of responsibility, providing leadership, development and performance management of the senior midwives to meet the service objectives and strategic vision. The Matron will have defined clinical areas of responsibility to complement their skill set, experience and professional interest, working collaboratively within the team of Maternity Matrons. Clinical areas include

- Antenatal services and triage

- Delivery Suite

- Antenatal and postnatal in-patient

- Community

- Birth Centres

Main duties of the job

The Matron provides forward-thinking clinical and professional leadership to nursing/midwifery staff at all levels within the Specialty, ensuring that midwifery care is delivered to a high standard and that the midwifery resource is managed effectively. The post holder will ensure that all patients are treated with compassion, dignity and respect placing value on equity, diversity and inclusion principles. They contribute to the ongoing implementation of the Maternity Strategy, ensuring achievement of its objectives and proactively developing nursing and midwifery roles. They will also undertake the key functions of the Matron role, ensuring that experience throughout the service is always of the highest standard inspiring patient, staff and public confidence. The post holder will be supported to work clinically for 20% of their time to role model professional behaviours, maximise relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and maintain clinical currency.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Patient care

- Act as a strong advocate for excellent personalised care.

- Ensure that the environment for care is safe, clean and focused on the needs of the service users of maternity services.

- Demonstrate and promote a family centred style of clinical practice.

- Ensure midwifery practice and care delivery is in accordance with relevant research and evidence base and trust policies and guidelines.

- To maintain clear, accurate and concise records in line with Trust and professional standards. This will include writing patient reports for e.g. medical practitioners and solicitor’s requests.

- To communicate effectively with women, birthing people and families potentially complex, sensitive or distressing information; to provide personalised care.

- Always maintain patient dignity and confidentiality.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Active registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • United Kingdom recognised degree in Midwifery
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional portfolio and registration revalidation
  • Evidence of leadership qualification with NHS Leadership Academy or similar
Desirable criteria
  • United Kingdom recognised Master’s Level degree or evidence of study at this level

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to prioritise own workload and that of others as appropriate

  • Excellent presentational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to manage a large staffing group and deal with complex staffing issues

Clinical / Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience of a clinical/managerial position (significant experience at band 7)
  • Operational management experience within acute hospital or community setting
  • Substantial experience of teaching and mentoring more junior staff
  • Full understanding of the specialty monitoring frameworks and the NHS organisations reporting obligations and their contribution to ensuring the organisation meets them
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of leading and managing a team, including managing conflict
  • Experience of research/audit and benchmarking utilizing the results to improve the quality of care
  • Significant experience of successful change management and/or service redesign
