Job overview

We are looking for a motivated and proactive Pharmacy Technician to join our Pharmacy Stores and Procurement team.

This varied role combines operational leadership within the pharmacy supply chain with direct patient-facing responsibilities, supporting the safe, effective and efficient delivery of pharmacy services across the Trust.

Working closely with the Senior Pharmacy Technician, you will help oversee stores and distribution activities, ensure compliance with Good Distribution Practice (GDP) and Wholesale Dealer Authorisation (WDA) requirements, and act as a key point of support for the wider team. 

You will also contribute to dispensary services, medicines optimisation initiatives, medicines reconciliation, patient counselling and discharge planning, making a direct impact on patient care.

Based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, this is an excellent role for a skilled pharmacy professional looking to develop their leadership, operational and clinical experience within a dynamic hospital environment.

Main duties of the job

This is a varied role spanning pharmacy procurement, stores and distribution, dispensary services and medicines optimisation. Working closely with the Senior Pharmacy Technician, you will support the day-to-day running of the Pharmacy Stores, Procurement and Distribution service, helping to ensure the safe, efficient and cost-effective supply of medicines across the Trust. You will provide operational support to the wider team, contribute to service development, maintain compliance with Good Distribution Practice (GDP) and Wholesale Dealer Authorisation (WDA) requirements, and support procurement, stock control and distribution processes. The role also includes involvement in supplier management, medicines shortages, contract compliance, staff training and service improvement initiatives.

As an accredited checking technician, you will contribute to a high-quality dispensary service, undertaking final accuracy checking of prescriptions and controlled drugs, dispensing medicines for inpatients, outpatients and discharge patients, and providing advice and support to healthcare professionals and patients.

You will also support medicines optimisation and discharge planning by undertaking medicines reconciliation, assessing patients' own medicines, facilitating timely discharge and counselling patients on the safe and effective use of their medicines. Working closely with pharmacists, doctors and nursing staff, you will help improve patient outcomes and promote best practice.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Accredited Checking Technician qualification.
Desirable criteria
  • Medicines Optimisation qualification, or willingness to work towards this.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Strong clinical and dispensary knowledge with excellent attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work confidently with patients and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Good IT skills and the ability to prioritise workload, make sound decisions and work accurately under pressure.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience managing workload effectively within a team to meet service demands.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy stores, distribution and medicines supply processes.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in a busy hospital pharmacy dispensary environment.
