Job overview
The countywide Chest Unit at GHNHST is currently staffed by eight consultant thoracic physicians. The catchment for thoracic services is essentially the whole of the county of Gloucestershire with a population of approximately 560,000. All consultants participate in a specialist respiratory on call service 24/7. The respiratory department has 4 respiratory StRs and 1-2 acute medical specialty trainees, plus a staff grade.
Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:
- To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s service plans
- To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in these specialties
- To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
- To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies

Main duties of the job
Key responsibilities include:
On call for general medicine is a full-shift rota with split weekday and weekend day and night shifts.
The incumbent is expected to look after patients on the respiratory ward and outlying wards and provide respiratory input to other specialties under consultant supervision. The appointee is expected to supervise more junior members of the team. Trainees are expected to complete Mandatory training and other requirements specified in the curriculum. Trainees are expected to maintain prompt and accurate communication with general practitioners about patients seen in wards and outpatients.
Trainees are expected to take part in departmental governance activities including audits, mortality and morbidity meetings as well as teach other trainees and attached medical students.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration and a licence to practice
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
Desirable criteria
- Intercalated BCs, BA or equivalent
- MSc involving time taken from standard five-year undergraduate medical curriculum
Clinical/Experience
Essential criteria
- Completed internal medicine stage 1 training or equivalent
Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
- Up-to-date knowledge and experience
- Knowledge of evidence-based practice
- Broad range of IT skills
- Able to provide leadership within a team and able to work as a team member
Desirable criteria
- Awareness of current relevant strategy and policy developments within the NHS
