Job overview

The Respiratory Unit are offering a fantastic opportunity to join our progressive and dynamic Acute Respiratory ward as a Ward Sister / Charge Nurse.

As a team we are committed to providing high quality care to our patients. We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our compassionate and driven team.  You will need to be flexible, enthusiastic and passionate about respiratory nursing showing commitment towards service improvement.  You will work alongside the senior nursing team and Matron to provide strong clinical leadership to the ward facilitating the delivery of high quality, patient centered care.

Our award-winning Respiratory Department has been instrumental in caring for patients with complex respiratory conditions resulting  in the development of a Respiratory High Care unit across the 8th Floor in line with the Trusts ‘Fit for the Future’ plans. As a team we are able to offer you excellent managerial support and are fully committed to your personal professional development.

Main duties of the job

Our successful Sister/ Charge Nurse will be able to work alongside the existing team in a leadership role to assist in the enhancement and development of Respiratory services, with a particular focus on the delivery of high-quality care within a busy and acute environment. You will be in charge of the clinical shift and dedicated to ensuring the planning, implementation and evaluation of high standards of care embedding the Trusts behaviours and values.  

Applicants must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well a passion for improvement and be committed to the development of your team. You will need to be calm and resilient with the ability to deal with challenging situations ensuring you are able to provide support to  junior members of the team and maintain patient safety. Successful candidates will actively assist and support the ward manager to ensure the effective management of the ward and deputise in their absence.  You  must be flexible in being able to work as part of a 24-hour service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

Managing and professionally leading the nursing team as a key member of the multidisciplinary workforce.
 
The directly delivery and co-ordination of patient care; ensuring that the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of that care is of a high standard, encompassing the Trust vision of ‘best care for everyone’
 
Ensuring that Trust local policies and procedures are known and adhered to and will ensure all duties are carried out in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.

Participating in Quality Improvement projects to assist with service development in line with Fit for the Future Plans

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Active registration with the NMC as a Registered Nurse
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional portfolio, registration revalidation and commitment to lifelong learning
Desirable criteria
  • Post Graduate teaching certificate or working towards one

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate post registration experience in Respiratory Nursing / High Dependency Care.
  • Can effectively manage and lead a clinical shift ensuring patient safety and high standards of care are maintained.
Desirable criteria
  • Risk assessment and Audit Experience
  • Experience in Service Development

Knowledge/ Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of extensive clinical skills inclusive of caring for patients requiring Non-invasive Ventilation
  • Acts as a role model and able to lead by example to ensure the Trusts Values and Behaviours are reinforced throughout their area of practice
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of Safeguarding policies and procedures
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
