Job overview

We are seeking a motivated and experienced staff nurse to join the pre-operative assessment team.

The team provides detailed anaesthetic and nursing assessments for elective procedures for both day surgery and overnight stay patients due to undergo a general or regional anaesthetic or sedation. You will be part of a  team but will need to be able to work independently within a clinic, managing a potentially complex caseload of patients. The successful candidate will have an interest in peri-operative care and be able to thrive in a busy area with many time pressures and deadlines. This post provides a great deal of job satisfaction and a chance to provide one on one patient care.

Main duties of the job

The staff nurse in POAC is responsible for the pre-operative assessment of adult patients having a planned surgical procedure for their fitness for general or regional anaesthetic or sedation and surgery within Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder will be responsible for patient-centred assessments which includes liaising with patients, their carers, and the multi-disciplinary team. The pre-assessment covers the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient. They will be responsible for identifying issues that can be resolved and optimising patients prior to surgery, in- order for the patient to have the best possible surgical outcome, This will involve initiating plans of care to be facilitated within secondary care or within a community setting as appropriate.

The Pre-operative Assessment team come from a variety of clinical backgrounds bringing a range of knowledge and experience that benefits the whole team. A comprehensive induction programme will be undertaken and both internal and external training will be provided. The team works across site covering both our clinics based in Gloucester Royal and Cheltenham General  hospitals.

  • Active registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council NMC
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional portfolio and registration revalidation
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised Mentoring and Assessing in clinical practice course
  • Recognised qualification in pre-operative assessment

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant post-registration experience
  • Knowledge of the Trust IT systems or equivalent Hospital IT system
  • Basic Pharmacological Knowledge
