Job overview
The Specialty Doctor will join a multidisciplinary team that provides most of the General and Colorectal services at Ysbyty Gwynedd and Llandudno General Hospital. This includes both outpatient and inpatient care. Although these posts have been approved to support colorectal services, the fellows will have plenty of opportunities to gain skills in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery and Colonoscopy. They will also be expected to support the team of Robotic Surgeons and join them in theatre.
(The fellow will be expected to be free from elective commitments while on-call for acute general surgery. All Specialty Doctor are supported by CT/FY2 and FY 1 doctors for managing acute emergencies. They also have a commitment free consultant general surgeon available to supervise and support their practice.)
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be accountable to a team of two Consultant Colorectal Surgeons. The candidate will have independent duties as deemed appropriate by the consultant.
· Provision with colleagues of a service in the specialty to the Betsi Cadwaladr University Local Health Board with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and the proper functioning of the department.
· Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and for contributing to postgraduate and continuing medical activity, locally and nationally
· Participation in medical and clinical audit
· Involvement in research to the extent that clinical duties allow
· The post holder will be responsible to the Clinical Director (Surgery) through the Lead Clinicians in General Surgery. Day to day responsibility will be to the Consultant to whom the surgeon is attached at the particular time
· In addition the post holder will:
· Participate in outpatient clinics
· Provide clinical supervision to junior medical and nursing staff.
· Be involved in Multi-disciplinary team and other clinical meetings
· The daily smooth running of the ward will be the responsibility of the fellows in general surgery.
Audit of clinical activities, evidence based medicine and maintenance of clinical governance will be expected.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration
- MRCS/FRCS
- Satisfy UK/EEA Immigration regulations or eligible for work permit
Training and Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to provide a complete employment history
- 48 months in surgery not including foundation modules
- Broad Based experience in general surgery
Desirable criteria
- Previous Colorectal and General Surgery experience
- Ability to perform Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
- Previous experience in upper and lower GI endoscopy
Basic Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria
- General medical procedures and skills appropriate to the grade
- Supervision and teaching of junior doctors and nursing staff
- Ability to know when to ask for help
- Ability to apply knowledge.
- Ability to write relevant, legible clinical notes
- Safe and effective oral communication skills.
- Willingness to involve patients in their management.
- Ability to handle interviews with patients or relatives with tact and sensitivity
- Basic IT skills
Desirable criteria
- Competent in providing General Surgery Emergency On-call at Middle Grade level
- Clinical experience outside specialty
- Additional experience in Colorectal Surgery
- Advanced IT Skills including knowledge of web site authoring.
