Job overview
This is a CT-equivalent post aimed at those new to the specialty, or with less than 3 years prior experience in Anaesthesia. Our department also hosts deanery core trainees and we aim to replicate the formal Core Training curriculum, as relevant to existing experience.

Main duties of the job
On-call work will then involve covering the 1st on-call, covering the emergency theatre. This is one of 4 resident rotas providing 24/7 cover. There is readily-available consultant support.
The post involves working a 1 in 9 pattern of on-call:
- Long days (including 1 in 9 weekends) 08:00 to 20:30
- Nights 20:00-08:30
- The above is in addition to standard days 0800 to 1700 in operating theatres or ICU.
On-call shifts are allocated according to a request rota, with appropriate compensatory rest periods.
Working for our organisation
We provide anaesthesia for a wide range of surgical specialties including Maxillofacial, Vascular, General surgery and others. There are ample opportunities to experience routine and advanced anaesthetic practice including difficult airway management, ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia and TIVA.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful candidate will undertake an initial period of directly supervised training in order to complete the RCoA “Initial Assessment of Competence” (typically 2 – 3 months, dependent on experience). During this period, the post-holder will not be expected to cover on-call duties, and will receive the base salary only. Depending on prior experience and the needs of the service, out-of-hours on-call work covering the ITU may be offered during this period, renumerated accordingly.

Essential criteria
- Medical degree
- Eligible for full or limited registration with the GMC at the time of appointment
EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
- Clinical experience in Anaesthesia or Critical Care
- Logbook evidence of clinical experience to date
- Specialist skills or experience.
CLINICAL GOVERNANCE
Essential criteria
- Evidence of an understanding of the strategic and operational issues underpinning clinical governance and their application in daily practice.
- Evidence of participation in clinical governance.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of taking the initiative to further the clinical governance agenda.
ABILITY
Essential criteria
- Safe and effective oral communication skills.
- Willingness to involve patients in their management.
- Ability to handle difficult interviews with patients or relatives with tact and sensitivity.
- Basic IT skills.
MANAGEMENT

- Evidence of understanding of NHS management practices.
