Job overview

The post holder will deliver dental care and advice to patients and their carers from community groups, including patients with additional needs, who meet the acceptance criteria of the Community Dental Service. Services to be provided include preventive care and advice, dental treatment, care under sedation and general anaesthesia, and work within the community.

To work alongside specialists in special care dentistry, consultants in paediatric dentistry, restorative dentistry and orthodontics.

Main duties of the job

The main role of the Dental Officer is to provide routine dental care to patients referred to, or accessing the Dental Service. Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Providing dental care to patients with specific requirements using behavioural techniques, conscious sedation or general anaesthesia if within competencies.
  • Liaising with a range of social and other health care personnel and agencies to ensure the effective management of and delivery of care to patients with specific requirements.
  • Involved with the delivery of a domiciliary dental service to patients who may require such services.
  • Delivering care, as required, in a variety of locations within a defined locality.
  • Providing emergency and urgent care

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To deliver dental clinical care to patients with specific requirements through the process of examination, assessment, treatment planning and management.
  • To deliver dental care to patients on a domiciliary basis.
  • To use appropriate local anaesthetic and patient management techniques to control pain and anxiety during dental treatment including the use of conscious sedation techniques to those with excessive anxiety, dental phobias or with limited co-operation 
    due to impairment.
  • The provision of emergency and urgent dental care.
  • Identify commonly occurring medical emergencies and lead the dental team in the appropriate first line management of such emergencies, using appropriate techniques, equipment and drugs.
  • To maintain accurate clinical and statistical records through the use of paper systems, electronic patient management system and other data capture and collection systems that may be used within the Service.
  • Endeavour to continuously improve and monitor the quality of the dental service and safeguard high standards of care by creating an environment in which clinical excellence can flourish.
  • Take responsibility for the management of the immediate clinical environment and immediate dental team during clinical sessions.
  • Communicate with a range of patients and their families on individual clinical issues and communicate with all members of the clinical team and peers in an appropriate way and also with other health and social care professionals involved in the care of patients.
  • Take part, as required, in dental epidemiology work.
  • Understand the responsibility for health and safety issues.
  • To conduct oneself in an ethical and professional manner consistent with the standards expected of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) and the General Dental Council as outlined in their document, ‘Standards for the Dental Team’. This will include standards related to clinical performance, competence and professional and personal behaviour.

Person specification

Qualifcations

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the General Dental Council
  • Bachelor in Dental Surgery or equivalent
  • Proven maintenance of postgraduate continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate qualification, demonstrating an appropriate clinical skill
  • Membership of a professional organisation/learned society
  • UK-accredited Vocational Training or equivalency

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent NHS experience in CDS/Salaried Service and/or GDS experience
  • All aspects of general dentistry
  • Provision of care to patients of all ages
Desirable criteria
  • Domiciliary and/or dental mobile environment
  • Assessing and treating vulnerable patinets with special clinical needs and/or challenging behaviour
  • Experience in inhalation sedation
