Consultant Geriatrician

Consultant

Our cultural ambition is to have a culture that places people at the heart of all we do, where we all belong, and where learning, improvement and excellence thrive.

Job overview

We are seeking enthusiastic and visionary Consultants in Geriatric Medicine to help shape and grow our evolving older person services. This is a pivotal moment to join Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as we expand our front-door services and begin laying the foundations for a community-based model of care over the next 2–5 years—reflecting our commitment to delivering care closer to home.

Our Trust operates older person services across three sites: Winchester, Basingstoke, and Andover. We are currently looking for consultants who are particularly interested in working at the Basingstoke site, where exciting developments are underway.

At Basingstoke, we provide care for older adults across 55 dedicated inpatient beds, located within three specialist wards: F1, F2, and F3. These wards are central to our mission of delivering safe, compassionate, and high-quality care for our ageing population.

We have recently launched a Frailty Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit at Basingstoke, which has quickly become a vital part of our integrated care pathway. It works closely with community partners and supports patients through our frailty virtual wards, ensuring continuity of care beyond the hospital setting.

Beyond our acute inpatient wards at Winchester and Basingstoke, we also operate a dedicated rehabilitation unit in Andover. Looking ahead, we are committed to strengthening our liaison services to provide more comprehensive and coordinated care across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking applicants with broad experience in Medicine, who demonstrate exceptional team-working skills and the leadership qualities needed to drive service development across the Trust.

A commitment to education and lifelong learning is central to our values. We are proud to offer a rich and supportive educational environment for trainees, fostering growth, curiosity, and clinical excellence.

We particularly welcome candidates with a passion for teaching, and we actively support applications for honorary teaching positions at our affiliated medical school in Southampton.

Working for our organisation

Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the leading provider of hospital services for North and Mid Hampshire and the surrounding areas. Our hospitals in Basingstoke and Winchester offer a comprehensive range of acute services and serve as tertiary referral centres for colorectal, liver, peritoneal carcinomatosis, haemophilia, and pseudomyxoma surgery.

We deliver services across three main sites—Basingstoke, Winchester, and Andover—serving a population of approximately 600,000. This includes:

Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital (BNHH)
Royal Hampshire County Hospital (RHCH) in Winchester
Andover War Memorial Hospital (AWMH)
Plus several community hospitals

Our model of care is designed to provide a unified hospital service across multiple localities, ensuring patients receive high-quality care as close to home as possible.

BNHH and RHCH are located just 23 miles apart, ideally positioned along the M3 corridor, with excellent transport links to London and the South Coast.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will lead a team of Resident doctors and multidisciplinary staff in delivering high-quality care to inpatients, outpatients, and emergency admissions. You will work collaboratively within a dynamic multidisciplinary team, playing a key role in achieving both national and local clinical and quality targets, in partnership with commissioners and clinical colleagues.

We welcome applications from those seeking full-time or part-time roles, and we actively support flexible working arrangements wherever possible.
