Job overview

Working within a team of specialist Consultants and junior doctors in training, the post holder will be expected to initiate and provide sound clinical/medical practices to patients admitted to the Medicine division, whilst supporting patients’ family and friends demonstrating the patient is the central focus of care. 


The focus of the job is in research. The postholder will be expected to take part in National clinical trials in gastroenterology and hepatology. They will also pursue their “own account” research with Professor Ramage
and will receive training in research methods involving use of data, statistical methods, writing abstracts and papers. The person will be expected to compete at least one paper during their year at HHFT and attend some national meetings. They will also have some clinical training relevant to their level.

Main duties of the job

  • Attend clinics
  • Attend Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings
  • Pursue own account research supervised by Consultant
  • Assist Gastro research team with national trials
  • One endoscopy list per week (if appropriate to training)

Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • GMC Registration
  • Basic Life Support
  • Management of medical admissions at ST3+ level
  • MRCP Part 1 and Part 2
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of continuing professional updating
  • Awards/distinctions whilst studying for 1st or 2nd Degree
  • Advanced Life Support
  • MRCP
  • Prior experience of working within the NHS in the last 6 months

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Clinical knowledge and expertise; appropriate knowledge and ability to apply sound clinical judgements to problems
  • Research skills; demonstrates understanding of the importance of audit and research
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching medical students
  • Appropriate speciality experience
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievement e.g., prizes, awards, distinctions, presentations, publications, other achievements
