Job overview
This new appointment as an ortho-geriatrician speciality registrar is part of a plan to improve outcomes for all older trauma patients where orthopaedic trauma is consolidated for HHFT on the Basingstoke site. The successful candidates will work in partnership with a forward thinking, enthusiastic Orthopaedic department to deliver comprehensive care to our older orthopaedic trauma patients throughout their hospital pathway.
The role will include pre-op and frailty assessment, liaison with anaesthetic staff, ReSPECT discussions, post-op care and rehab to be delivered as part of an Orthogeriatric team within the Orthopaedic service. Currently there is no commitment to the general medical, care of the elderly or on-call medical rota, if interested this can be explored further. The appointee will join our Orthogeriatric team, supported by a consultant nurse and nurse practitioner as well as other orthopaedic resident doctors. The department benefits from the clinical support of an experienced geriatric consultant, Dr Oswell. .
This is an excellent opportunity to develop clinical experience and a portfolio in Orthogeriatrics or medicine for older people for a candidate working towards an application for a specialist training post, or for someone wishing to persue completion of the portfolio pathway. This post may best suit someone with experience of older person’s medicine or looking for a longer-term position, where they can play a role in the development of the post.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicants will be expected to:
- Deliver quality Orthogeriatric and medical services in the most effective way regularly benchmarking service to improve practice, under the supervision of a Consultant Orthogeriatrician
- Continue to enhance and develop the Orthogeriatric service
- Work to strengthen links with GP’s and neighbouring Trusts
- Meet NHFD target for delivering best practice care in Fractured Neck of Femur patients
- Initiate and take part in regular clinical audit
- Have an active role in research
- Support the organisational aim of Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, making a positive contribution to the management and financial strategies
