Job overview

This is a full time post for a period of 6 months from 3rd September 2025 until 1st September 2026, based at Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester. The post is a middle grade paediatrics (ST3 level and above) but can be adapted to suit a trainee who has completed training and wishes to develop his /her CV towards consultant application. 

This post is central to delivering effective patient care at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.  The post will be primarily based in Winchester, but you may be asked to attend other sites as required. The post will be involved in all aspects of diagnosis and treatment of patients.  The post holder would be on the Paediatric Middle Grade rota which includes resident on-call shifts. 

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will participate in a full shift working pattern based on a seven week cycle, including resident nights. A consultant will be available at all times for support and advice. 
Each middle grade post is ‘New Deal’ compliant with an average working week of 48 hrs. 
Annual and study leave is co-ordinated by the leave co-ordinator. 
The post holders will work with other colleagues to provide a comprehensive pediatric service including neonatal services (level 1). There will be the opportunity to lead ward rounds and run regular general Paediatric clinics. There is a resident on-call commitment. He / she will also be encouraged to be involved in and experience other aspects of the service including management and education and will be supported to attend relevant senior management and governance meetings. Applications for part-time working would be considered. 

A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the clinical supervisor. On occasions and as patterns of service provision evolve and change, further rescheduling of clinical sessions may take place following negotiation with your clinical supervisor. The post holder will be allocated a pediatric Consultant at the start of the post who will provide educational supervision and mentoring.

Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • DCH or equivalent
  • APLS or equivalent and NLS
Desirable criteria
  • MRCPCH

Clinical Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Basic training in general Paediatrics and Neonates
  • At least 2 years' experience in Paediatrics
Desirable criteria
  • NHS experience
  • Worked at middle grade level
  • Experience in Outpatient and Community Paediatrics

Clinical Skills & Ability

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents and staff
  • Ability to work with and to lead a team
  • Understanding of the importance of multi-disciplinary working in delivery of patient care
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate ability to manage change and an understanding of the principles of service improvement

Research & Teaching Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate participation in clinical governance activities such as audit.
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate participation in research and/or medical education

Other Specific Requirements
