Job overview

The Peritoneal Malignancy Institute is an internationally renowned Tertiary Service for patients with a rare form of cancer. Patients under the care of this service face significant challenges including preparation for major surgical interventions, ITU Delirium and associated post psychotic trauma, adjustment disorder, coping, anxiety and low mood and recovery demands or facing bad news. 

We are looking for a Clinical Psychologist to contribute to supporting patients during their highly emotive time which includes preadmission, during their stay and on occasion following discharge. 

The post holder will join our supportive multi-disciplinary team and work under the consultant psychologist. You will be responsible for contributing to the development of this exciting, new role, providing the application of multi-level psychological knowledge, and understanding to a team that already includes counselling and art psychotherapy. You will be asked to provide level 4 interventions, virtually, as well as face to face and contribute to service developments. You will be working within a small established psychology team and with multi-professional specialists such as surgeons, clinical nurse specialists, ward staff, nutritionists and physiotherapists.

It is an 8a post but we would consider a newly qualified applicant with experience in health psychology, on a preceptorship programme.

Main duties of the job

  • To contribute to the provision of a high quality, specialist clinical psychology service, as part of Psychology Services at PMI
  • To provide highly specialist (Level 4) psychological assessments and input for patients
  • To provide virtual interventions for people before they are admitted support them on the ward and if needed follow up virtual appointments once they are discharged
  • To work with MDTs: attending meetings, providing specialist advice, consultation to help ensure that all professionals have understanding of how psychological interventions can be used for both symptom management and the alleviation of psychological distress

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Doctorate in Clinical Psychology as accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).
  • • Member of Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • • Training to include models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan development psychology.
Desirable criteria
  • • Post-doctoral training in additional specialised area of psychological practice, preferably health psychology.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Experience of working with patients with acute, chronic and potentially, terminal physical health conditions with complex needs or transferable skills in this area
  • • Experience of implementing service developments informed by audit and outcome data
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for patients’ psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care-co-ordinator and also within the context of a multi-disciplinary care plan
  • • Experience of working with patients with cancer

Skills and Ability

Essential criteria
  • • Skilled in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management of individuals presenting with complex physical and psychological health problems
  • • Doctoral level knowledge of clinical psychology including highly developed knowledge of lifespan developmental psychology, models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and models of health psychology and skill in the practice of at least two highly specialised psychological therapies
Desirable criteria
  • • Record of having published in either peer-reviewed or academic or professional journals and/or books.
