Job overview

To deliver a high-quality, safe, and efficient MRI and CT service within Candover Radiology, ensuring excellent patient care and diagnostic imaging standards.
The post holder will independently assess and justify imaging referrals, undertake a wide range of MRI and CT examinations, and ensure images are of diagnostic quality in line with professional standards, legislation, and departmental policies.
The role includes supervision and support of junior staff and students, participation in the 7-day MRI rota, and contribution to service development and continuous improvement.
The post holder will play an active role in maintaining service resilience, supporting service expansion, and embedding best practice across cross-sectional imaging.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Practice:

  • Assess, justify, and perform MRI and CT examinations in accordance with IR(ME)R, professional guidance, and local protocols.
    • Ensure high standards of patient care, safety, dignity, and comfort at all times.
    •Confidently run MRI and CT lists, including accommodating emergency and urgent requests.
    •Administer intravenous contrast agents and associated medications in line with departmental procedures, ensuring accurate documentation and reporting of adverse events.
    •Maintain MRI safety standards, ensuring compliance with local rules and national guidance.
    •Perform daily quality assurance checks and basic equipment troubleshooting.

Clinical Practice

Leadership and Supervision

Supervise, support, and mentor junior radiographers, assistant practitioners, support workers, and students.

Provide clinical advice and support to colleagues, including newly qualified staff.

Deputise for senior radiographers or superintendents as required, supporting operational service delivery.

Contribute to staff training, induction, and competency development.

Support a positive learning culture by contributing to competency frameworks and reflective practice.


Service Delivery and Organisation

Manage and prioritise clinical workloads effectively, including during periods of high demand and out-of-hours working.

Respond flexibly to emergency interruptions, re-organising lists based on clinical priority.

Contribute to service planning, capacity management, and service improvement initiatives.

Ensure MRI and CT environments are safe, well maintained, and fit for purpose, escalating issues as required.

Participate in service audits and quality improvement projects to enhance efficiency, patient experience, and safety.


Governance, Quality, and Safety

Ensure compliance with Trust policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.

Actively contribute to clinical governance, risk management, and incident reporting.

Maintain confidentiality and information governance in line with Caldicott principles and data protection legislation.

Promote infection prevention and control and safe working practices at all times.


• Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and carers, including those with additional needs or communication barriers.
• Provide clear explanations of procedures, risks, and aftercare, obtaining informed consent where appropriate.
• Communicate professionally with radiologists, referring clinicians, managers, and multidisciplinary colleagues.
• Demonstrate empathy and reassurance when supporting anxious or distressed patients.
Information Technology and Systems

Use Trust IT systems including PAS, CRIS, and PACS effectively.

Retrieve, manipulate, and share imaging data in accordance with Trust policies.

Use digital tools for audit, presentations, reporting, and service monitoring.


Training, Audit, and Research

Participate in audit and research activities relevant to the department.

Support the education and supervision of student radiographers and learners.

Maintain personal CPD in line with HCPC requirements.

Engage with external training opportunities to support service development in advanced MRI and CT techniques.


Sustainability and Resource Management

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc (or equivalent) in Diagnostic Radiography
  • HCPC Registration
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD
Desirable criteria
  • SOR-approved cannulation and drug administration qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience in MRI and CT imaging
  • • Sound knowledge of IR(ME)R and relevant legislation
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of substantial experience in CT, including relevant legislation.
