Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for ensuring that patients experience a co-ordinated and streamlined journey through the emergency department, support patient flow and prevent unnecessary delays. 

You will provide a comprehensive and patient-centre administration ensuring that clinical systems are accurate and reflect the patients journey in real time. In addition to this you will work with a multitude of professions both within and outside of the department (such as clinicians, nursing staff, therapy staff, managers, bed managers and patient transport) to ensure quality indicators and required targets are met.

You will need to be able to concentrate for periods of time, use clinical systems and physically move around the emergency department, at times assisting with moving patients on trollies or beds to other areas to meet the needs of the service.

You will need to be able to work weekends, concentrate for extended periods, and be physically able to move around the department and assist with moving patients on trollies to admitting wards on occasions.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Educated to NVQ3/Diploma standard or relevant equivalent experience
  • Good general educational standards including GCSE or equivalent in English and Mathematics
  • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience in a customer facing role/general public
  • Ability to communicate to all levels of personnel and patients, often dealing with sensitive information.
  • Experience of data input and administration
  • Good IT skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Awareness of the Trust Performance objectives
  • Practical knowledge of Trust systems
  • Experience working in a clinical hospital environment
  • Understanding of emergency patient pathway (A&E Clinical Quality Indicators)
