Main duties of the job

To be part of a team providing specialist Paediatric Clinical Genetics services across the Wessex region, including triaging referrals, conducting genetics clinics, advising acute and specialist teams on rare and complex genetic disorders, interpreting genomic testing results, and supporting diagnosis and family management for inherited conditions. Provision of Cancer and/or Cardiac Genetic services may also be considered, depending on the skills of the candidate and in line with the needs of the department. The role also contributes to teaching, training, audit, and service development within an integrated regional genomics and laboratory network.

Person specification

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • MRCP/MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Sufficient training, experience and competence in Clinical Genetics
  • Experience in variant interpretation
  • Experience of participation in regular and recent clinical audit
Desirable criteria
  • MD, PhD
  • Qualification in Education
  • Clinical and research interests that complement the department
  • PgCert in Genomics or Genomic Medicine
  • Variant interpretation course
  • GMC’s specialist registration with CCT/CCST in Clinical Genetics, or within 6 months of achieving this at time of interview
  • Previous experience of research with recent publications

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
  • Ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
