Main duties of the job

This role supports a Divisional Finance team in delivering effective financial management by leading on budgeting, reporting, and forecasting, to provide expert finance advice to budget holders and key stakeholders.  Additionally you'll be contributing to Cost  Improvement Processes and ensuring that financial controls are adhered to throughout the division. 

This role contributes to the division and organisation by ensuring accurate financial information, planning, reporting and monitoring, whilst supporting budget holders with effective financial management. You will be enabling informed decisions to be made,  supporting the delivery of divisional performance objectives.

You will be reporting to the Finance Manager, and will work closely with the Divisional Finance Teams. You will collaborate on a regular basis with a wide range of staff groups (both clinical and non-clinical), such as,  budget holders, divisional management teams, other Senior Management Accountants, and the R&D department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will be able to lead on the production of monthly finance reports and budget statements throughout the month end process, clearly highlighting both month on month movements and actual performance against plan, analysing and interpreting variances, and proactively working with the team to explain and understand these variances. 

Additionally a key aspect of your role will be regularly meeting with budget holders to review their budget and spend in detail, ensuring they fully understand their financial position (both from a GBP and WTE perspective). You will act as the first point of contact for finance queries, building strong working relationships to support effective financial management and financial control. 

One of the key responsibilities of this role is to act as line manager for the Management Accountant within the Divisional Finance Team. Therefore, you would contribute to the allocation of work, recruitment decisions, career development and appraisals.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and expertise across a range of accounting areas acquired through professional accountancy qualifications (and membership) such as Certificate Level/Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) or working towards a CCAB accountancy qualification or educated to degree level with an equivalent level of knowledge and experience gained in a finance role.
  • Detailed understanding of financial systems and general ledger transactions and reporting.
  • Experience supervising a team.
  • Detailed understanding of budgetary control processes.
  • Understanding of financial information systems and ability to extract information in a form to support budget managers.
  • Comfortable with IT and able to use spreadsheet modelling packages.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in an NHS finance environment.
  • Experience with Oracle IT system.
  • Line management experience.
  • Able to work from home effectively / flexibly.
