Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role

Main duties of the job

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team of trainee and credentialed Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACP) in the Adult Emergency Department (ED) at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS).

Our ACP's play a vital role in the delivery of emergency care across all area's of the ED, working as part of the multi-disciplinary team caring for patients with a wide range of pathologies from the life-threatening to the self-limiting.

Our team is currently made up of 8 ACP's who are credentialed with the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) and 8 trainee ACP's who are at various stages of their training.

As a trainee you will be supported in your development working towards credentialing with RCEM by a Consultant or Associate Specialist working in Emergency Medicine and a Credentialed ACP, as well as other members of the clinical and nursing workforce.

Working for our organisation

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS, we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognising that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a trainee ACP you will undertake a programme of academic and work-place based education, demonstrating your development and competence against the RCEM ACP curriculum, culminating in credentialing as an ACP with RCEM.

Successful candidates will be enrolled on the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice course at the University of Southampton, undertaking a range of clinically-focused modules in line with the requirements of the role, including independent prescribing (if not already held). You will also attend a range of additional courses and study days including regional training days, life support courses such as Advanced Life Support (ALS) and European Trauma Course (ETC), plus regular teaching sessions within the department.

Those who are already instructors on life support courses are afforded paid time to participate in teaching to maintain their instructor status.

You will be expected to work in conjunction with the 4 pillars of Advanced Practice (Multi-Professional framework for Advanced Clinical Practice in England - Health Education England (HEE, 2017). Clinical, Leadership, Research and Education. Under supervision you will deliver an advanced level of clinical care within the field of emergency medicine, using collaborative and independent judgement to assess, investigate, diagnose, manage and evaluate your own caseload in all area's of the ED. You will develop your leadership and management skills within the ACP and wider team within the Emergency Department, acting as a role model to other staff, demonstrating professional accountability.

The role includes participating in and leading on audit and research, to evaluate and improve the quality of care and service that we provide to our patients, including undertaking quality improvement projects. You will take an active role in your own education as well as the delivery of education to other members of the team, and patients.

We are looking to appoint a health care professional with experience working in a clinical role as a practitioner, who is able to assess patients, decide on an arrange appropriate investigations, consider differential diagnoses and implement a management plan. You must hold a professional undergraduate qualification and registration with no fitness to practice restrictions.

Due to the high educational demands of this programme, previous academic study at Level 7 (Masters) is essential.

We would welcome applications from trainee ACPs and other Advanced Practitioners who are working at this level and may have completed some elements of the portfolio.

The trainee role is at agenda for change Band 7 with uplift to a Band 8a on successful completion of the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and Credentialing as an ACP with the Royal College of Emergency Medicine.

UHS is a Major Trauma Centre, with a commitment to providing ongoing educational and development opportunities in this area. We also work alongside a variety of specialities within the ED and so team working is key to our success.
