This post is appointed on a fixed-term basis for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum

Main duties of the job

Senior Fellow in Advanced Gynaecological Ultrasound 

This is a 12-month post and is an excellent training opportunity for a highly motivated senior trainee or clinician with a keen interest, experience and ability in gynaecological ultrasound.  
 
The year will be structured in two parts: an initial training/ supervisory period where the candidate will have clinics with a senior sonologists to advance their skills in ultrasound in areas such as endometriosis, early pregnancy complications and adnexal masses 
 
This would be followed by a period of indirectly supervised ultrasound clinics and finally the opportunity to scan independently in ultrasound clinics. 
 
During this post you will also be required to support labour ward and on-call rota 
 
Should the candidate desire, an opportunity to attend psycho-sexual clinics is also available. 
 
The post is aimed at a senior trainees/ post CCST or equivalent who have their RCOG intermediate gynae scanning modules in gynaecology and early pregnancy (or equivalent) who wish to advance their skills. 
 
During the year the candidate will be expected to attend advanced scan training courses and to take part in audit and there may be opportunity for research.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Advanced ultrasound clinics including endometriosis, adnexal masses and routine early pregnancy
  • On call commitment for obstetrics and gynaecology
  • Audit +/- research opportunities

You will work with other members of the obstetrics and gynaecology service at the Princess Anne Hospital (medical, midwifery, nursing and support). 

You will work closely with senior nursing staff in ambulatory gynaecology, ultrasound and acute gynaecology (gynaecology assessment and early pregnancy unit). 
Review:
It is recognised that the work programme for any new post will take time to settle into a regular pattern. Therefore, the job plan will be reviewed in discussion with Clinical Lead in ultrasound after 3 months.

From time to time if may be necessary for you to carry out such other duties as may be assigned, with agreement, by the Trust. It is expected that you will not unreasonably withhold agreement to any proposed changes.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION  

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed fellow doctors and dentists.  Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application. 

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. 

Grades for Trust appointed fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)     
 Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5; 
•    Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training    
•    Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS) 
•    A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)

Please note, that part of the selection process is to assess your ultrasound skills in person, as that is an essential part of the role. Therefore we are only able to hold face-to-face interviews.

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • MRCOG full membership or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent in Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • Outpatient hysteroscopy ATMS
  • Completion of a formal ultrasound training course
  • Evidence of research experience or involvement in ultrasound-related projects or publications
  • Educational supervisor course
  • Previous experience performing or reporting diagnostic ultrasound examinations.
