Further details about the role can be found in the job description below.
Main duties of the job
Applications are invited for a Senior Specialty Fellow in Oesophagogastric Surgery (12 months- starting in April 2027). This post is a Royal College of Surgeons of England approved fellowship in Oesophagogastric and Revisional Bariatric Surgery. The post is suitable for candidates who wish to consolidate training leading to them being able to manage the full spectrum of elective and emergency, benign and malignant upper GI (oesophagogastric) cases. They will contribute to a 1:4 subspecialist (OG) consultant on call rota in a busy teaching hospital and major trauma centre. This post would suit candidates who hold CCT or are within 6 months of holding a CCT.
The successful candidate will join a team of 4 consultant surgeons delivering tertiary malignant and benign upper GI regional surgical services serving the people of Southampton and the Wessex region. While the subspecialist on-call service will be based in Southampton the appointee may be expected to provide services at Lymington New Forest Hospital and other regional hospitals as required in future. The Upper GI unit at UHS has a well-earned reputation for clinical and academic excellence and the successful candidate will be encouraged to take an active role in governance, audit and clinical and translational research.
Working for our organisation
As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.
We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.
Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 30% lower than London and 17 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.
We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Fellow will have day-to-day leadership responsibilities for in-patient care and experience/training will be provided in laparoscopic and robotic surgery (including oesophagectomy), advanced endoscopy and the management of complex benign and emergency Upper GI conditions subject to current experience and development needs. The Fellow will be expected to help deliver audit and research projects within the unit and develop an annual expert surgical meeting.
Please see the attached Job Description and Person Specification for full details of the role, including responsibilities, requirements, and essential criteria.
