Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the newly established UK Dementia Trials Network (UK DTN). The post holder will be part of the Research Delivery  Team here in Southampton and will collaborate with Principal Investigators, UK DTN funded site staff and Alzheimer's Society Nurses across the UK, as well as liaising with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to facilitate the efficient and effective development and growth of early phase dementia clinical trial delivery.  We are seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic, organised and experienced senior research nurse with excellent communication skills to help develop and maintain maintain a growing portfolio of early phase dementia clinical trials, as well as supporting the systems, procedures and teams associated with the delivery of early phase dementia clinical trials in the Dementia Research Centre(DRC) and the NIHR Southampton Clinical Research Facility. The post is to start as soon as possible for [3 years] in the first instance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The ideal candidate will be a Senior Research Nurse with significant experience in delivering interventional clinical research trials. 

You will possess a great attention to detail and the ability to understand and relay complex information to colleagues and patients.

You will ideally have experience  in delivering Dementia trials  and  Clinical Dementia Rating

You will demonstrate excellent leadership skills with the ability to liaise, negotiate and influence.

Ability to work in an open plan office where there may be distractions.

This is an on-site role.  Flexibility to accommodate participant visits and study protocol timings will be required. 

Ability to travel to meetings locally, regionally and nationally will be expected. 

 

The UK DTN Alzheimer's Society Senior Research Nurse is an experienced Research Nurse with experience of working with patients and participants with Dementia.  Working in partnership with the UHS Senior Research Nurses and Matrons,  the  DRC Director, Head of Nursing and R&D infrastructure, the post holder will be responsible for providing clinical and professional leadership and line management to research staff within the Dementia portfolio.  The post holder will have responsibility for overseeing the management and delivery of early-phase research studies in partnership with key stakeholders to ensure that all studies are delivered to high research and clinical governance standards.

The Alzheimer's Society Lead Research Nurse will be responsible for providing leadership, support, training, and education for the trials team, supported by the senior nursing and management teams and Principal Investigators.. The post holder will also be responsible for directly managing patients on clinical trials.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse on relevant part of the professional register (NMC)
  • Evidence of on-going professional development.
  • Educated to Post Graduate Degree level or equivalent experience
  • Recognised qualification in teaching and mentorship
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised qualification in teaching and mentorship
  • Recognised qualification in relevant speciality

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent experience of working with patients at a senior level.
  • Clinical Research experience.
  • Relevant speciality experience.
  • Knowledge of current issues within acute health care
  • Recent management experience
  • Recent NHS experience or equivalent Knowledge of Research Governance Framework (RGF), International Conference on Harmonisation/Good Clinical Practice
  • Ability to work independently assessing and treating patients participating in research.
  • Updated and informed of relevant research guidelines and legislation, and information on all aspects of research governance at both national and local community health levels
  • Understanding of personal accountability
  • To be able to read and understand complex research protocols
  • Experience of teaching and mentorship

  • Research coordinator experience.
  • Experience of budgetary control
  • Venesection and Cannulation
