Main duties of the job

•    The departments are looking for a junior surgical fellow to help support the surgery service at University Hospital Southampton NHS FT. This post is ideal for those who have just completed foundation programme and is interested in career in surgery to looking gain exposure in various surgical specialities.
•    This is a rotational post involving 4 months placements within various surgical specialities such as  Trauma and Orthopaedics, general surgery,  surgical HDU and ENT.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are looking to appoint three fellows at a FF3/CT1 equivalent level to support the surgical department including general surgery, T&O, ENT and surgical HDU. 

All posts have a service element and the following covers the majority of duties. You will be on the full SHO on-call rota as part of the post. There will be minor variations in different posts but the list is aimed at covering the majority of duties: 
1.    Day-to-day management of patients both pre and post operatively handing over the medical night team daily. 
2.    Liaise between nurses, Doctors, patients, relatives and senior medical staff. 
3.    Attend and participate in ward rounds as timetabled 
4.    Attend regular supervised theatre lists 
5.    Complete discharge summaries and communicate with GPs and other clinical colleagues as required. 
6.    Completing sick notes where appropriate 
7.    Study for higher examination and maintain continued professional development. 
8.    Attend educational and multidisciplinary sessions. 
9.    Undertake audit at various times throughout the rotations. 
10.    Teaching commitments to medical students and foundation year 1 doctors
11.    The post will form part of a full shift rota in the area you are allocated
12.    2 hours/week self development time (SDT) 
13. Attend departmental teaching 

 

  Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).   
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.  
Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. 
Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)     

Basic Salary – MT03 £49,909  
               
Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview  

Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.  

Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.

  • Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams

  • Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Ability to motivate and develop the staff in the department
Desirable criteria
  • Certification in a teaching course
  • Surgical logbook with at least 10 cases

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the GMC/eligible for registration
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • A wide range of clinical skills and practice in the speciality
  • Documented audit experience
  • Minimum of six months experience in the NHS
  • Minimum of 4 months experience in a surgical speciality at a foundation year 1 or 2 level
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of Foundation training Programme
  • Less than 18months surgical experience
  • Certification in ATLS, ALS, BLS
  • MRCS part A or equivalent
  • Presentation at a national or international meeting
  • Peer reviewed publication
