Job overview

This post is an exciting opportunity to work within a proactive and dynamic team consisting of 7 paediatric dietitians and 2 dietetic assistants. We are looking to recruit a motivated dietitian who has varied post graduate clinical experience and a strong interest in paediatric dietetics. Applicants with less practice in this field who are highly motivated will also be considered. Teamwork and excellent communication skills are essential for this role.

The post holder will be working across both sites, Royal Hampshire County Hospital and Basingstoke & North Hampshire, alongside the paediatric team. The clinical remit of this post has a varied and interesting caseload including but not limited to the paediatric ward, Diabetes MDT clinic, and general clinics. 

The Dietetic Departments at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is friendly department of around 25 staff spread across 2 main sites (Basingstoke and Winchester). 

Continued professional development is actively promoted through various initiatives such as work based shadowing, conferences, and dietetic interest group meetings relevant to the post. The department is actively involved in the training of dietetic students from 3 universities. There are opportunities to deliver training to other members of the MDT, and group education sessions for patient groups.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as part of the paediatric dietetic team.
  • To provide a highly specialised nutrition and dietetic service to the child health business unit, working at Royal Hampshire County, Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and in the local community to ensure high standards of care in line with evidence based practice and national guidelines.
  • To contribute towards service developments through audit and patient surveys, driving changes that improve patient care.
  • To manage and prioritise a delegated caseload, including Gastroenterology, Oncology, Nutrition support and a cow’s milk allergy group session.
  • To advise medical and nursing staff on the appropriate use of prescribable specialist food products and formulas.
  • To maintain continued professional development and be involved in relevant dietetic special interest groups.
  • To participate in the training of student dietitians & apprentices.

Working for our organisation

The post holder will be based at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester, although cross site working may be required with  Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke.

The Dietetic Department at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is friendly department of around 25 staff spread across 2 main sites (Basingstoke and Winchester). 

We work closely with the dietetic department which consists of a team of 25 dietitians, 2 nutrition specialist nurses, 3 dietetic assistants and 2 secretaries. As a department, we are involved in student training and take students on their A, B and C placements. We are committed to appraisal and continued professional development and have excellent clerical and IT support.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post has a wide variety within it. As well as covering the children’s ward in Royal Hampshire County Hospital, the post holder will have weekly  clinics and attending the MDT diabetes transition clinics.

There will be opportunities for CPD, audit and service development.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc Nutrition and Dietetics or equivalent
  • Registered with the HCPC as a dietitian
Desirable criteria
  • post gradute qualification in paediatrics

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad range of clinical dietetic experience including some in paediatrics
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of paediatrics
  • Experience with Diabetes

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Clinical supervision skills
Desirable criteria
  • Abilility to use a number of IT systems including Microsoft or electronic documentation
  • Full drivers licence with access to car
