The Senior Respiratory and Sleep Physiologist works under the general supervision of the Lead Physiologist for the Wye Valley Respiratory and Sleep service to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of a wide range of respiratory, sleep and ventilation disorders including outpatient respiratory and sleep testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education .

The person should have specialist experience in basic sleep technology / advanced respiratory testing. To perform as an independent practitioner using clinical experience to manage patient care in a medical clinical environment. 

Main duties of the job

  • To perform, analyse, and interpret reports on basic and advanced sleep studies.
  • To perform advanced respiratory physiology tests.
  • Implement and audit the quality control of scoring within the department (inter scorer reliability programme).
  • Providing day-to-day leadership for the sleep / respiratory teams and coordinating activities.
  • Reviewing existing procedures and developing new protocols for additional services in line with expansion of the Service.
  • To assist the Chief Physiologist with the development of PSG / MSLT and MWT service development and delivery of service.
  • Develop the expanding CPET service, working with Pre op assessment and Surgeons form other centres.
  • Supervision, teaching and training of trainee physiologists, nurses and medical students.
  • Liaise with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure patients’ treatment is appropriately managed.
  • Taking an active role in research and audit.
  • Take an active role in the departmental budget and have good understanding of funding and expenditure.
  • Providing rapid access investigation for in-patients.
  • Mange the acute and chronically unwell patient with regards to ventilatory needs.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This/these new post/s offer(s) an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery of our Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), due to open in 2025 in Hereford.  

 

The Community Diagnostic Centre will incorporate Imaging (Plain X-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI), a range of cardiorespiratory investigations including echocardiography, ECG and rhythm monitoring, blood pressure monitoring, spirometry, FeNO, lung function tests, simple field tests, sleep investigations, oximetry, blood gas analysis and pathology services in a "one stop" location to obtain diagnostic information in cancer, cardiac, respiratory, musculo-skeletal and other conditions.

 

Successful candidates will work at the Hereford County Hospital site initially and then in rotation between the hospital site and our CDC site which will open in 2025.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registration Council for Clinical Physiologist (RCCP) or Health Care and Professions Council.
  • BSc Clinical Physiology (Respiratory) Degree pre 2012 or MSc Clinical Physiology (Respiratory) Degree post 2012 or equivalent?.
  • Master’s Degree or Equivalent level of knowledge or Specialist Training Programme e.g. Relevant Post Graduate degree or Equivalent Specialist modules / courses in Respiratory and Sleep
  • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) or European Sleep Research Society (ESRS) Expert Sleep Technologist Certification or willingness to work towards
Desirable criteria
  • Association for Respiratory Technology & Physiology (ARTP) / British Thoracic Society (BTS) Part 1 and 2 national qualifications.

Essential criteria
  • Proven ability to delegate and prioritise both clinical and administrative work.
  • Strong ability to critically analyse research and disseminate findings applying to practice to improve specialist area of practice.
  • Demonstrable evidence in own specialist interest and contribution toward developing clinical practice.
  • Ability to respond to, adapt to and lead service change.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven post-qualification experience as minimum Band 6 Respiratory/Sleep Physiologis
  • Demonstrable experience of complex decision making.
  • Significant Experience of Autonomous working
