Specialty Doctor Ophthalmology

Specialty Doctor

Job overview

This post as a Specialty Doctor in Ophthalmology is suitable for a person who wishes to undertake a range of duties in the Victoria Eye Unit, Powys Hospitals and associated peripheral clinics.

The Specialty Doctor post is for a full time, fixed term position for 12 months, 10.0 PA career doctor.  The timetable will vary, but focus largely on Glaucoma and Cornea patient pathways, as well as supporting Eye Casualty.

The timetable will include a variety of outpatient clinics sessions, according to clinical experience. The department currently has 8 consultants and training in new skills is part of the post and we would welcome a flexible personality who is keen to develop.

The Victoria Eye Unit is a tight-knit and friendly department based at Wye Valley NHS Trust, serving the county of Herefordshire and surrounding area.  We have the largest catchment area of any department within the Trust and serve a population of approximately 250,000.

The department is actively focused on continuous improvement and has well equipped clinics, with fully networked imaging facilities. A comprehensive eye casualty service is provided, and a wide range of ophthalmic surgery is carried out.

Main duties of the job

The degree of responsibility given to the appointed doctor will be commensurate with his/her experience and managed by the clinical lead & consultant ophthalmologists in the Hospital Eye Service.  The timetable will necessarily be flexible to fit with the needs of the service, out of hours commitment is not expected. An example timetable is included purely for guidance and details will be altered depending on skills and experience of the individual, needs of the department, and the number of sessions contracted for.  Experience in delivering intra-vitreal injections such as Lucentis would be an advantage.

Applications will be considered from candidates wishing to work part-time.
