Job overview

The post holder will work closely with the Senior Pharmacist for Education and Training to provide a comprehensive education and training service to the Pharmacy Department. The role will predominantly include delivering training and education to all pharmacy professionals with an emphasis on ATO development, training and supporting undergraduate and foundation year pharmacists, and supporting education for the safe and effective use of medicines to other healthcare professionals.

 

Occasional duties to include taking medicines histories and completing medicines reconciliation, making therapeutic interventions within scope of practice, supply of medicines, final checking of medicines and counselling patients. In addition management responsibilities will include line management of junior staff, assisting with the day to day running of the service and monitoring performance, of the service.

The role will also involve making continuous improvements to the service using innovative techniques to develop the pharmacy technician role and pharmacy profession.

Main duties of the job

Training & Development (main): 

 

       To deliver training to all grades of staff to promote an efficient and safe Pharmacy team and to ensure that Pharmacy staff feel comfortable as part of the MDT. 

       To establish a clear pathway for Pharmacy Technicians to train and develop their knowledge and skills.

       To create robust training plans and training records for Pharmacy Assistants and Pharmacy Technicians.

       To support the Senior Pharmacist in the development of adequate training documents for rotational pharmacists.

       To actively carry out CPD to support learning and development in area of responsibility. 

Managerial Responsibilities:

 

       To write and maintain SOPs to ensure safe systems of work and clear roles and responsibilities.

       To line manage a range of staff.

       To monitor the efficiency of the team by preparing and benchmarking work statistics as KPIs.

       To complete staffing rotas for area of responsibility.

       To be responsible and accountable for the pharmacy service provided to area of responsibility. 

       To consider study for and attain the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Operational Management with ILM.

       To be responsible for identifying equipment that needs to be purchased for their speciality area and liaise with the department admin team to arrange this.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 and or BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science
  • Accuracy Checking Technician Qualification
  • Level 4 Clinical Diploma or willingness to complete if not already achieved
Desirable criteria
  • Management Qualification at Level 3

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic management principles including team management and motivation
  • Extensive knowledge of clinical pharmacy and ward-based working
  • Knowledge and skills to mentor and develop staff

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant relevant experience as Pharmacy technician
  • Writing SOPs
Desirable criteria
  • Involvement in leadership and project delivery
