Job overview

The purpose of this role is to manage and support the delivery of ICT solutions within the Wye Valley NHS Trust Pharmacy directorate, ensuring that data systems are maintained, current, and aligned with operational needs. This includes enabling efficient, responsive, and financially sound pharmacy operations; supporting accurate procurement, dispensing, and labelling of medicines; and ensuring clear visibility of medicine availability.  

The post-holder will lead the Pharmacy Data Systems team, liaise with internal stakeholders and external providers, and ensure high-quality, evidence-based data reporting. They will also oversee staff training and development in data systems, contribute to business continuity planning, and ensure that all digital services meet departmental, Trust, and NHS strategic objectivesThere will also be operational commitment to the Pharmacy service weekends and Bank Holidays on a formal rota (currently 1:6). (ROTATION FREQUENCY SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

Main duties of the job

  • To identify, develop, and lead improvements for the pharmacy data systems, ensuring they meet operational needs and align with Pharmacy Board directives. 

  • To maintain and implement written Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and training programs to support consistent and compliant use of Pharmacy Data systems. 

  • To schedule and oversee maintenance and development tasks for the Pharmacy Data Systems team, while actively contributing to their execution. 

  • To investigate and respond to data system or reporting errors, directing corrective actions and escalating to the Chief Technician when necessary. 

  • To develop and implement operational processes for the  cabinets across the Trust’s clinical sites. 

  • To manage the maintenance and accuracy of data, ensuring compliance with financial, regulatory, and procedural standards. 

  • To ensure that data sets used for medicine procurement, distribution, and dispensing are accurate, up to date, and compliant with regulatory and professional standards

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 and or BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council as Pharmacy Technician
  • Postgraduate degree in systems management/equivalent experience
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Accuracy Checking Technician qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Management Qualification at Level 3

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Communicate effectively to all levels of staff
  • IT Literate in routine Microsoft applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel etc)
  • Extensive knowledge of any of, or all, Pharmacy Data Systems
  • High degree of self-motivation and ability to work on own initiative
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic management principles including team management and motivation

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of leading and managing a team, inclusive of multi-disciplinary and collaborative working
  • Significant relevant experience as Pharmacy technician
  • Significant experience/knowledge of a Pharmacy inventory management system
  • Experience of writing, editing and validating Standard Operating Procedures
  • Experience of developing, maintaining and developing data sets
