Job overview

Wye Valley NHS Trust wishes to appoint an Associate Specialist for Urology, to be based at the County Hospital, Hereford.

The current Urology Department is made up of 4 Consultants, 1 Associate Specialist, 6 Specialty Doctors and a supporting team of Clinical Nurse Specialists. We are looking to introduce a second Associate Specialist to the team.

The successful candidate will be a urological surgeon with an interest in General Urology.  This post will provide a comprehensive general urology outpatient, inpatient and diagnostic and day case surgery service for urology patients. Those who are skilled in the surgical management of BPH and other core urology work would be particularly welcomed. The main role will be to conduct the clinics in Urology Diagnostic and treatment centre supported by the CNS team and Registrars. Independent theatre is also available on alternate Saturdays.

Main duties of the job

The Trust have a dedicated Urology Diagnostics and Treatment Centre, carrying out One Stop assessment clinics as well as Flexible Cystoscopy, Local Anesthetic Template Biopsy, Urodynamics and a dedicated Lithotripsy machine for both elective and emergency ESWL.

Robotic surgery on the Davinci platform is available for trained and experienced surgeons with this modality. Training and mentoring to use the robot will be offered to the successful candidate, as required.

The Trust has a successful record in Supporting Doctors through the CESR process, with 3 Doctors having completed and now working at Consultant level.  The Trust are happy to support any candidates in progressing CESR applications if of interest.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide a Specialist Grade service for the management of urological diseases, as required for outpatient, inpatient and day-cases at the WVT.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary audit meetings.
  • Be actively involved in postgraduate training / teaching especially for the SpRs in the department.
  • Participate in departmental audit and clinical governance activity.
  • Work with the management team to meet the organisation’s waiting time targets for all patients.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 5 years’ experience of clinical experience of managing complex Urology conditions at/above Specialty Doctor grade
  • MB BS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Successful in intercollegiate speciality examination or overseas equivalent

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience of independent clinical management of complex surgical presentations
  • Experience & ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Experience of supervising trainee doctors
  • Ability to teach clinical skills
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates Experience of supervising SpRs

Training

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience required to offer independent clinical opinion on a range of conditions within the speciality of Urology

  • Advanced laparoscopic surgical skills
