Job overview

The Maxillo Facial Department at Hereford Hospital provides high standards of dental care to patients in and around Herefordshire. As part of this service, we provide orthodontic treatments and dental surgery to patients who have been referred by dentist and clinicians for a variety of reasons. We provide Maxillo Facial services in the department including skin surgery removal for suspected skin cancer and provide follow up care for these patients.

Main duties of the job

·         To provide specialist clinical dental nursing advice to patients/ carers, other health care professionals ensuring that this is understood and complied with. Recognising and implementing the use of appropriate communicational aids and skills, tact, persuasion, to deal with possible barriers to understanding. 

·         To identify each patient’s medical and dental nursing needs, before, during and after treatment of the patient. Advise, triage and prioritise dental emergency patients to ensure they receive the most appropriate care.

·         To support with surgery work providing assistance to the Oral surgeons in the clinical care of patients, this will include, the setting out of instruments, extraction of teeth, assisting with oral biopsies as part of the diagnosis process and assistance in sedation sessions. 

·         The dental nurse will be expected to maintain a high standard of aseptic technique during all surgeries, additional training will be provided to enhance these skills within the clinical area. 

·         To be responsible for the efficient cleaning and sterilising of work surfaces and equipment.  

·         To be responsible for ensuring that surgery equipment is maintained, in good working order and used in the appropriate manner. 

·         To provide basic Oral Health Education to the patient and participate in other relevant Oral Health Promotion activities.·  To assist the orthodontic Doctors in mixing of material necessary for Impressions.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • National Qualification for Dental Nurses
  • Level 3 diploma in Dental Nursing
  • Registered with the General Dental Council

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Be able to communicate effectively with patient groups and use skills to reassure patient where necessary
  • Able to work under pressure
  • Standard Keyboard Skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 12 months experience of working in Dental Practice
  • Experience and knowledge of a wide range of dental procedures
  • Experience of using a range of IT programmes, including a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office especially Excel, Word and PowerPoint
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within a Hospital Setting
  • Experience of providing Orthodontic treatment
