Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity for an Associate Specialist in Endoscopy to join a high‑performing, JAG‑accredited endoscopy service delivering diagnostic and therapeutic procedures across Wye Valley NHS Trust’s two‑site model. Working within a multidisciplinary team of Gastroenterologists, Upper and Lower GI Surgeons, Clinical Endoscopists, specialist nurses and decontamination technicians, the post holder will contribute to the delivery of safe, effective and patient‑centred care for a population of 235,000 across Herefordshire and Powys.
Main duties of the job
The role is central to supporting the Trust’s commitment to high‑quality endoscopy, with the expectation of undertaking five independent scoping lists per week, covering both upper GI endoscopy and lower GI endoscopy. The post holder will also play an active role in supporting the department’s training culture, including participation in the JETS training programme, and will contribute to the clinical supervision and development of Clinical Endoscopists. As part of ongoing service expansion, the successful candidate will be expected to undertake further training in Transnasal Endoscopy (TNE) with appropriate support and mentorship from senior endoscopists.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Independent Endoscopy Lists. Undertake a minimum of five independent endoscopy lists per week, delivering high‑quality diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI endoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy, in line with JAG standards and Trust protocols.
- Training in additional procedures. Commit to developing competencies in Transnasal Endoscopy (TNE), participating in supervised training lists and competency‑based progression.
- Clinical Supervision. Provide day‑to‑day clinical supervision, guidance and support to Clinical Endoscopists, contributing to skills development, quality assurance and safe practice.
- JETS Training Programme. Actively participate in the JETS training environment, supporting trainees, contributing to training lists, and promoting a positive learning culture.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration. Work closely with medical, surgical, nursing, decontamination and administrative teams to ensure seamless patient pathways and high‑quality service delivery across both Hereford County Hospital and Ross‑on‑Wye Community Hospital.
- Quality and Governance. Contribute to clinical audit, service improvement, incident review and adherence to JAG standards, supporting the department’s commitment to continuous improvement.
- Patient‑Centred Care. Provide compassionate, respectful and informed care, ensuring patients are supported throughout their procedure and involved in shared decision‑making.
- Professional Development. Maintain and develop clinical skills through CPD, appraisal, and participation in departmental teaching, ensuring practice remains aligned with national standards and emerging evidence.
Person specification
Education & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Primary Medical Qualification. Full GMC recognised medical degree.
- GMC Registration — Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practice.
- Postgraduate Training. Evidence of completion of core medical training or equivalent.
- Endoscopy Accreditation. JAG compliant certification in upper and lower GI endoscopy.
Desirable criteria
- Higher Qualifications. MRCP, MS, MD, PhD or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
- Teaching Qualification. PGCert in Medical Education or equivalent.
Training
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable training and competence in diagnostic OGD & demonstrable training and competence in flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy.
- Advanced Endoscopy Development. Willingness to undertake supervised training in TNE.
- Lower GI Endoscopy Training. Demonstrable training and competence in flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy.
Desirable criteria
- JETS Training Experience. Prior involvement in JETS or similar structured endoscopy training programmes.
Experience & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Experience performing independent upper and lower GI endoscopy lists with KPI’s that match or exceed current JAG requirements.
- High Volume Endoscopy Services. Experience working within a busy, multidisciplinary endoscopy service.
- Clinical Supervision Experience. Experience supervising junior clinicians, trainees or clinical endoscopists.
- Independent Endoscopy Practice.
- Governance Awareness.
- Understanding of JAG standards, safety processes and quality assurance in endoscopy.
Desirable criteria
- Experience in therapeutic procedures such as polypectomy or haemostasis.
