Our wards are mainly based at Kingfisher Court in Radlett, we have a ward in St Albans (Albany Lodge) and a ward in Stevenage (Aston).

The wards provide mental health services to inpatient service users.  Each ward has a multi-disciplinary team including psychologists, occupational therapy, recreational workers as well as the nursing and medical team.

Our staff survey results tell a story of highly engaged, motivated, passionate people working at HPFT. The survey has shown that staff overwhelmingly believe that their role makes a difference to service users, to the extent that HPFT had the best score nationally for this question.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will:

  • be a key member of the Inpatient Team
  • be responsible / primary nurse for a designated group of patients
  • be responsible for the assessment of their needs and for the planning
  • implement and evaluate the care provided to meet service user needs
  • provide clinical supervision to junior staff members
  • have excellent communication and relationship management skills
  • treat patients with fairness and respect, maintaining confidentiality appropriately
  • assist the inpatients manager, the team and charge nurses in maintaining standards of care
  • be fully involved in ward rounds, handovers and other meetings where patient care is discussed and reviewed as required
  • participate in the assessment, admission, transfer and discharge of patients according to local guidelines and standards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • In addition to managing the clinical aspects of being a Band 5 Staff Nurse, you will take an active part in the assessment, treatment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for service users in collaboration with inpatient multi-disciplinary services.
  • You will be liaising with colleagues and carers, ensuring they are fully aware of all aspects of a service users’ care and treatment.
  • You will have effective communication skills and be able to contribute towards patient recovery and wellbeing.
  • You will be able to identify individuals' care needs.
  • You will be planning, implementing and evaluating care plans and risk assessments in collaboration with other teams and professionals.
  • You will be maintaining lines of communication with all departments and staff involved in a service user’s care. Reporting on progress and effectiveness to the appropriate MDT.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RMN\Dip (Mental Health)
  • Live registration with NMC
  • Mentorship & Preceptorship after one year
Desirable criteria
  • Appropriate post registration qualification
  • Basic Food Hygiene Certificate

Skills\knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Detailed knowledge of legislation and practise guidelines concerning Adult Acute Mental Health
  • Ability to develop professional relationships with staff, service users and all other stakeholders
  • Ability to lead and motivate others
  • Provision of effective clinical supervision
  • Excellent communications skills – written, verbal and able to complete computer data entry and recording
  • Good team worker, able to demonstrate organisational skills
  • Awareness of budgetary needs of the service
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to participate in training of others – students and other team members
  • Working with people detained under the Mental Health Act (1983)

Aptitude

Essential criteria
  • Ability to identify priorities of service and the need to deliver a high standard of care
