Job overview

We are recruiting for a Biomedical Scientist - Cellular Pathology who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist with appropriate experience to join the Cellular Pathology Team at the Lister hospital. You should possess excellent communication and time management skills and have a systematic approach to your work together with a flexible work approach.

The department is very busy with tight deadlines so candidates must be able to work under pressure.

This post involves rotation around each area of the Cellular Pathology department, including Immunohistochemistry, Special Stains and BMS sample transfer.

Main duties of the job

The Cellular Pathology team consisting of Medical Consultants, Biomedical Scientists (BMS), Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA) and secretarial support staff work together to deliver a high quality service, handling approximately 30,000 patient sample requests a year.

The department is well-equipped, fully computerised, and offers experience in all aspects of routine histology, diagnostic cytology, frozen sections and immunohistochemistry.

To undertake the preparation of histological specimens, on rotation through the department.

Works individually and un supervised

To undertake the non-routine specialist techniques of the laboratory e.g. special stains, immunohistochemistry

 To undertake the preparation and sectioning of large blocks including staining of sections produced

To undertake MLA duties on rotation through the section.

Qualifications / Training

Essential criteria
  • State registration with Health Professions Council (HPC)
  • HPC accredited degree
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (IBMS CPD)
  • Section paraffin blocks at 25/hour

Previous Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 1 years experience
  • Ability to work independently and without supervision
  • Ability to supervise trainees and junior staff
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of windows based programmes, including excel, power point
  • Experience of clinical audit

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to carry out a variety of complex analytical procedures on a range of clinical specimens
  • Ability to prioritise work.
  • Ability to work accurately and quickly in an organised manner and with attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively and at all levels
  • Sound understanding of established written policies and protocols, including COSHH regulations
  • A good knowledge of Health & Safety requirements Good understanding of clinical governance and its implications
  • Ability to make decisions and recommendations using own initiative and judgement based on practical and theoretical knowledge
  • Ability to produce reports and protocols
Desirable criteria
  • Previous participation in audit projects and an understanding of audit and outcome
  • Ability to interpret statistical data

  • Ability to work safely and effectively under pressure
  • Excellent hand-eye co-ordination (microscopy)
  • Sound understanding of data protection and patient confidentiality issues
  • A sound understanding of quality requirements
  • Emotionally robust enough to deal with stressful situations
