Job overview

Applications are invited for one position of Anaesthetics & Simulation Fellowship.

It is a fixed term appointment for a period of 12 months to cover vacant training post, commencing from August 2026 (other start dates may be considered). This post is based at Lister Hospital in Stevenage, is full time and the post holder will be expected to participate on the 1:8 on call rota.

This is an excellent opportunity within the Anaesthetics department at East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust. The on-call rota will be a 1 in 8 full shift rota. Opportunities will be available for the appointee to develop their skills in all areas of Anaesthetics. Clinical duties include provision of anaesthetics services for all specialties at Trust sites as well as out of hours cover for theatres, ICU and pain services.

The post will look to supporting those doctors who are developing a career in anaesthetics, in particular any CT2 equivalencies, which are required prior to applications for higher specialty training (ST).

Main duties of the job

It is envisaged that there will be an approximately 4:1 split between clinical and educational duties (i.e. 80% of day time with anaesthetics department, and 20% with education department). However, it is expected that the appointee will cover 100% of the ‘on call’ commitments.

Main clinical responsibilities:

  • To provide a junior doctor level of clinical responsibilities with consultant cover.
  • To participate in the department’s teaching, audit, and educational activities.
  • Sessions in the operating theatres, intensive care or obstetrics.
  • Provide a safe and effective anaesthesia service across all areas of the hospital.
  • Supporting on call tier of trainees in Anaesthesia (theatres and Obstetrics) / ICU during on call in order to provide a safe and effective emergency service.
  • Supporting the Critical Care Outreach Service.

Working for our organisation

At East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust, we are proud of the range of general and specialist services we provide and our 6,000 or so dedicated staff ensure our patients get the best care. Our ability to be flexible and innovative in the way in which we work and deliver our services to our catchment has never been more important than it is now.

We run the following hospitals:

  • The Lister Hospital, Stevenage
  • New Queen Elizabeth II (New QEII), Welwyn Garden City
  • Hertford County, Hertford
  • Mount Vernon Cancer Centre (MVCC), Northwood

We have ambitious plans to become an outstanding, patient-led Trust where dedicated staff provide high-quality, compassionate care to our patients.  We continue to undergo significant transformation and our staff and patients are at the heart of delivering this ambitious agenda.

We are committed to a positive work life balance for our employees.  This means that any employee is entitled to seek to work flexible working patterns and we are committed to listen and consider all requests. Such requests, of course, have to be made and considered formally, and will need to be balanced against service needs, but our starting point will always be to find ways to support making them happen.
