Job overview

The Hertfordshire Children and Young People's Continence service are recruiting a band 6 continence nurse to join our passionate team for a 9 month fixed term secondment cover. 

The service is based at Peace children's centre in Watford but runs nurse led clinics across Hertfordshire. The service  operates Monday to Friday 9-5 with the option of condensed days 8-6 .  Flexible and part time working will also be considered. 

 

Main duties of the job

The service provides tier 2 continence support with the aim to

  •      Reduce the incidence of continence issues through effective, evidence-based treatment and education, ensuring the service is delivered to the highest standards of care and management.

·     Improve the quality of life for children, young people and their families/carers. Fundamental to this is the preservation of dignity, self-esteem and independence.

  • Ensure patients have the appropriate type and allocation of continence products to meet their clinal need
  • Provide training and education to other health, professionals, patients and carers on the promotion of continence and the management of bladder and bowel dysfunction

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide Level 2 specialist continence advice and information for children, young people and their carer’s.
  • To work autonomously, coordinating the management of continence problems for children and young people whilst promoting multi-agency working and education too improve continence for children and young people from 4yrs – 18yrs (or 19yrs in Special Schools.)
  • To function as a clinical practitioner within the Children’s Continence Team. To deliver direct patient care whilst, managing, co-ordinating and overseeing nursing practice.
  • To ensure that there is efficient and effective utilisation of all resources required to deliver optimum quality care to children, young people and their families who access the Children’s Continence Service.  
  • A commitment to service improvement in line with best practice, current research and commissioning intentions.
  • To deputise for the Children’s Continence Team Lead.
  • To contribute to the review and updating of service policies and procedures.
  • To maintain own continuous professional development including networking with other professionals

  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Evidence of professional development

  • continence qualification or completion of continence course
  • Advanced assessment skills

Experince and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of teaching and assessing children, parents and staff.
  • Knowledge and skills in the management of children’s continence
  • Clinical assessment skills and experience
  • Sound knowledge of safeguarding issues and legal framework.
  • An understanding on how continence issues impact on the lives of children, young people and their families
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and experience in Children’s Community Nursing
  • Experience in working with children requiring continence support

  • Ability to create and maintain good relationships with the child, young person and family while respecting family privacy and maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and information governance.
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of care and service provision.

  • Care for the child or young person with complex health needs or learning disabilities
