The expansion of the Improvement team means there is an exciting opportunity to join the team as a Senior Improvement advisor.

The team is leading the Trust on its quality improvement journey.

This position offers an opportunity for an individual with experience in improvement to contribute to taking WHHT to a new level of achievement and to embed QI into the culture at WHHT.

The post-holder will be required to have experience of using QI methodology to achieve improvement, have knowledge and experience of facilitating others to use Quality Improvement methodologies and teaching experience.

They will serve as an advocate for Quality Improvement across the Trust and provide expertise, advice, education and support to ensure that improvements are delivered effectively and for the benefits of patients and staff.

Main duties of the job

The post has a key role in supporting the Trust to meet its vision of incorporating quality improvement into our culture, our way of working, and supporting organisational change.

The team collaborates with the divisions to facilitate the use of QI methodology for improvement workstreams.  The team is responsible for developing the Trust QI capability. 

The post holder needs to be able to work autonomously and to support teams to deliver on project plans.  Good communication skills, and the ability to build relationship with staff from across the Trust is essential.  The ability to work with uncertainty and in changing circumstances is required. 

The post holder is required to have leadership experience demonstrating the ability to line manage, coach, and develop colleagues.

The Trust supports flexible working.  This post holder is required to work on site at Watford and to travel to both St Albans and Hemel Hospital.

Regular home working is not appropriate for this role; however, occasional home working may be considered when it supports service delivery.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Play a key role in liaising with teams across the Trust who are working to support improvement, exploring new ways of working, and supporting colleagues to adapt in a fast-changing environment.

Champion, inspire, and lead the development of a culture where improvement is a core component of every member of staff’s daily routine.

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior stakeholders, across divisions and services.

Take responsibility for the operational management of improvement projects with the nominated divisional leads.

Contribute to the body of research in improvement science.

Take responsibility for developing and implementing systems and processes for tracking organisation-wide QI work.

Take responsibility for analysing, reporting, and supporting the performance of QI programmes across the organisation.

Act as a leader, mentor, and coach to junior members of the QI team.

Deputise for the Head of Improvement.

Person specification

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSC (HoNs) degree education or equivalent experience
  • Clinical qualification.
  • Experience of working and dealing with patients and service users.
  • Quality improvement methodology training at an intermediate level or equivalent through study and extensive QI experience
Desirable criteria
  • Coaching qualification
  • Teaching qualification
  • Advanced QI qualification such as relevant master’s degree or Institute for Health Improvement IA course.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Specialist knowledge of the science of quality improvement.
  • Specialist knowledge of data for improvement.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of excel and NHS England SPC charts.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of undertaking or facilitating teams to undertake QI initiatives using a scientific approach such as the Institute of Health Improvement methodology
  • Experience at band 7.
  • Experience of managing change
  • Experience of analysing and presenting improvement data.
  • Ability to present complex data in an understandable format
  • Experience teaching.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience at band 7 with a Quality Improvement team.
  • Advanced Excel experience- able to manipulate data and use pivot tables.
  • Experience of leading a team.
  • Working across care settings.
  • Experience teaching the science of improvement.
  • Experience developing training materials and courses.
  • Experience facilitating Sharing Forum’s, networking and social connectivity.
  • Working with Clinical Pathway Groups to reduce variation.
