Consultant - Obstetrics & Gynaecology - Special Interest in Fertility

West Hertfordshire NHS Hospitals’ Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to augment the current consultant obstetrics and gynaecology team. This is an excellent opportunity to further develop in Obstetrics and General Gynaecology Surgical skills. Experience, or special interest in fertility is essential. The appointee will be an experienced and suitably qualified Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and will work with consultants within the department to provide a full elective and emergency obstetrics and gynaecology services to women attending the hospital.
The successful candidate will contribute fully to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology workload of the department, including Delivery Suite sessions, emergency gynaecology sessions, elective gynaecology lists, fertility clinics, an on-call commitment, and will take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate education. A demonstrable track record and commitment to research is desirable. The appointee’s Job Plan may be subject to change by mutual agreement with the Clinical Director, Women’s Services. The post is based across three sites and also will be working closely, within the community setting, in the Enhanced Gynaecology Community Services. and is based on a ten session Programmed Activities (10 PA) contract. Additional responsibilities agreed with successful candidates will attract an additional responsibility allowance.

The successful candidate will work alongside the Consultant team to provide a full elective and emergency Obstetrics and Gynaecology services to women attending the hospital. The appointee will contribute fully to the resident on-call workload of the department. The successful candidate will be expected to comply with all relevant Trust policies relating to the provision of patient care. This includes working to set timescales for the triage of referrals, the completion of discharge summaries prior to patients being discharged, following the specified process for the management of patients who do not attend their appointment or admission, and the completion of all records deemed necessary to support the clinical management of patients and attendance at MDT. Consultants are also expected to work with service managers and clinical colleagues to manage their caseload in a flexible way and to ensure that clinical, national and local priorities, such as maximum waiting times for referral to treatment, are achieved.

The post holder is expected to take part in an alternate week resident nights on-call for Obstetrics and will be expected to take an equal share in the Consultant weekend on-call rota and a full share of bank holidays. This on-call commitment may change subject to job planning.
The post holder is expected to do 2:4 (two nights every four weeks) resident night on call 20.00-08.00 hours, with prospective cover.
The Consultant weekend on call (08.00 -20.00) rota is 1:10 (one weekend, every 10 weeks) with prospective cover. The post holder will contribute to the consultant weekend on call (0800- 20:00).
The post holder will not be part of the non-resident Consultant weekend (20.00 -08.00) on call rota. Consultants have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of the department. They are expected to undertake management and administrative duties associated with the care of their patients and the running of their clinical department.
The appointee will be expected to take responsibility for maintaining their own continuing medical education to the standard set by the relevant Royal College, and to plan their continuing professional development jointly with the Trust to develop the clinical service. All Consultants are expected to take part in annual appraisal and job planning, and to agree a personal development plan each year which reflects the developmental needs of both the individual and the service.
Consultants are expected to assume responsibility, both singly and corporately, for the management of junior medical staff. They are expected to be responsible for approving and monitoring junior staff rotas, leave and locum arrangements. Consultants are expected to be involved with the professional development, both clinical and personal, of their trainees. In this respect, each Consultant acts as a personal educational supervisor to one or more trainee doctors. Consultants are required to participate in establishing learning agreements and formally appraising junior staff and will themselves be appraised in accordance with the policies of the Trust.
The Consultant is a member of clinical support services and is responsible to the Chief Executive via the Chief Operating Officer and Medical Director through the Divisional Director, Women’s and Children’s Services for the satisfactory conduct of their professional duties
