Job overview

We are looking for a part-time  Pharmacist/Technician to join the EPMA team.

 It is an exciting time to join West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust following the successful implementation of Oracle Cerner in 2021.

The focus is on continuing to embed the use of the Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (EPMA) system, further optimising it to enhance patient outcomes and to support the go-live of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS). 

The EPMA Pharmacist/Technician is a key member of the team, contributing to system management and development. The post holder will use their expertise to support the design and configuration of the system and to drive digital innovation. 

The WHTH Pharmacy and Electronic Patient Record (EPR) departments actively promote wellbeing and professional development, supporting each other in a collaborative environment.

The Trust is committed to investing in new digital technologies to improve both patient care and staff experience. 

This role is offered on a part-time basis, with flexible working options available, including home or remote working. 

Main duties of the job

Key aspects of the role include: 

Supporting EPMA and EPS system configuration, system development and testing .

Training and supporting all staff involved with the EPMA and EPS process (pharmacy, prescribers, nurses and other allied health professionals).

Working alongside the Pharmacy Team Lead to deal effectively with workflow and technical issues reported by end users. 

To act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for EPMA and EPS for the Trust – encouraging and supporting safe use of the system. 

Aid investigation of medication related incidents and optimise the system to reduce medication related risk, alongside the multidisciplinary team and Trust governance body. 

Independently scope change requests and pioneer digital innovation. 

Analyse data to promote benefits realisation and drive outcomes.

We are looking for someone who can meet competing demands and work with a vast range of stakeholders with differing priorities.

A genuine interest in digital innovation is a must, with experience of using electronic prescribing systems being an advantage. A desire to understand and work with other members of the Trust to co-design solutions is essential. 

The EPR and Pharmacy department will support the postholder’s continuous professional development through a wide range of opportunities and experiences.

Person specification

Education and qualifications:

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 and/or BTEC in Pharmacy Services or equivalent.
  • Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician qualification.
  • Accreditation in Medicines Management (or equivalent).
  • Registered with GPhC as a technician.
  • MPharm.
  • Completion of certificate in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent.
  • Registered with GPhC as a Pharmacist.
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma or degree.
  • Recognised IT qualification.
  • Digital qualification or course, preferably in Microsoft Excel.
  • Project Management qualification.

Knowledge:

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of prescribing and dispensing processes in inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Prior knowledge and experience working with prescribing and dispensing systems.
  • Knowledge of drugs and their uses, and an awareness of the implications of drug related errors.
  • Awareness of hospital systems such as PAS and EPR.
  • Proven evidence of maintaining a broad level of pharmacy practice and interests.
  • Understanding of the current initiatives within the NHS and the organisational structure (specifically in relation to Pharmacy).
  • Up to date knowledge of national pharmacy stock issues and medicines legislation.
  • Maintains personal CPD portfolio.
  • Good knowledge and use of MS Office, including proficiency with Word, Excel and PowerPoint applications.

Experience:

Essential criteria
  • Hospital experience (broad based clinical /ward experience).
  • Experience in using pharmacy labelling and stock control systems e.g. EMIS/Ascribe.
  • Experience in front-end use pharmacy digital systems.
  • Preparation and analysis of computer generated and written reports.
  • Experience of working within clearly defined occupational polices and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Experience of managing own workload and the workload of others, delegating and organising activities as appropriate.
  • Knowledge and experience of recording data, including sensitive information, on pharmacy computerised data record systems.
  • Experience of working with a wide range of other health care professionals.
  • Analyse and interpret complex clinical information where there are a range of facts and where a range of options need to be compared and present them confidently to various stakeholders.
  • Previous experience of participation in audit.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience using Cleo (EPS system) and Oracle Cerner (EPMA system).
  • Experience of delivering projects in a timely manner.
  • Leading and implementing a digital change within an organisation.
  • Experience in configuration of an EPMA system.
  • Experience in developing SOPs.
  • Risk management experience.
